I just watched an advertisement for Plan B

I'm baffled.

Is an advertisement necessary? Are there vast numbers of other morning after pill options that people are flocking to so that Plan B has to entice people to choose it by name?

I'm not offended, I'm confused.

It's useful to (a) make sure people are aware of its existence (b) educate them on how they might get it and (c) ensure that people have positive connotations with its use.

It sounded less educational and more like one of those "go to your doctor and ask for this brand by name" commercials, which is the part that confused me.

Well it's still an ad they paid to run, they definitely want to emphasize their brand as well.

A lot of people probably don't know what it is, so the commercials serve to inform them. The amount of bad or missing information people have about sex-related stuff is amazing.

Commercials that seem unnecessary are also sometimes a tax thing.

Considering the number of high schools that only teach abstinence and how much misinformation there is about Plan B (ex. some people think it's an abortion pill), yes.
