Honestly...
(Anonymous) 2016-01-25 12:03 am (UTC)(link)People who act vindictive and petty like you bring out my own vindictive and petty side, and I'm not afraid to say it. I'll be the bad person in this thread.
"Clearly superior" my ass. Do we need to have a Fandom 101 class again where we cover "Shipping Dynamics Are Subjective", and how "Subtext Is King" (seriously are you not getting why AsaNoya is as popular as it is)?
Honestly, if the tone of this secret were different I wouldn't give a shit, ship and let ship, but oh boy petty people make me so damn happy when they're just wallowing in misery because basically no one else ships their "superior" ship.
+1
(Anonymous) 2016-01-25 12:19 am (UTC)(link)honestly whenever secrets like this get posted i'm just like 'hah! good, you deserve it for being such a high and mighty prick'.
also, asanoya is really cute and i honestly side-eye anyone who outright 'hates' pairings in series like haikyuu!! or free!, like i get not being fond of certain pairings (kurootsukki does nothing for me but that's just because i feel like there's literally no basis for it, and honestly kiyokoyachi, while cute and i would kill for more cute girl/girl pairings in sports shounen anime, just really isn't my thing because kiyoko's 'cold' personality gets a little grating sometimes for me), but the characters themselves are all so agreeable and nice to one another that people like secret!op just seem super immature to me.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-25 02:44 am (UTC)(link)...You know damn well the person you were replying to didn't mean that, but you know what, Oikawa is an annoying douche to Kageyama but he's certainly not nearly as bad as you're making him out to be.
So yeah, I agree with AYRT, actually HATING on couples from series that have ridiculously low-level drama like this is dumb and if you do it you're immature.
Re: +1
(Anonymous) 2016-01-25 02:59 am (UTC)(link)Oikawa is an annoying douche to Kageyama but he's certainly not nearly as bad as you're making him out to be.
i think you're extrapolating a quite a lot from a nine word sarcastic reply. i actually do like oikawa and kageyama both. not the biggest oikage fan, but i'm not invested enough to actually hate on it.
i take issue with what the other person was saying because hey, if you hate something, you hate something. i don't think there's anything wrong with that. this person made an anonymous secret, and, yeah, they came off as kind of smug and obnoxious (i for one actually like asanoya), but this is the better place to post ship hate than posting it in a ship's tags on tumblr or whatever.
i don't really hate any ships from hq, but there are other fandoms where i really do hate the ships, and, honestly, most of the time it's not because the characters are ~mean~ to each other or whatever. it's usually bc i think they're boring and overrated. that said, i don't bash these ships in the tags. hell, i don't even post my hate on tumblr. i talk about how much i hate these ships with like-minded friends on my locked twitter account. i don't really see how that's immature. plus, it's kind of fun bonding over things you hate, lol.
also, i think differentiating series between "high drama" and "low drama" in regards to whether or not it's immature to hate ships is kinda dumb, tbh.
Re: +1
(Anonymous) 2016-01-25 04:47 am (UTC)(link)Tbh you sound pretty immature yourself. You really sit around bonding with people over shit you hate? What happened to just avoiding that shit and shipping what you want? This sounds as stupid as the secret OP does. Why in the world would you feed your dislike for something? If I dislike something, I actively avoid it so I don't need to deal with that shit in my life.
"Hate" is such a strong word for fandom for crissakes. I can't fathom "hating" a ship, especially because secret!OP is making it real obvious they have a hard-on for Daichi/Asahi/Suga and Asahi/Suga which they view as ~superior~.
Also, I'm assuming by "low drama" the AYRT is talking about the stakes, and yeah I'd have to agree if that's the case. Actively hating ship comprised of two high school boys who admire one another is a little--no, a lot--imamature. Like I can see someone being like "I really dislike BLANK ship because in canon they want to kill each other" or some shit, but Asahi and Nishinoya as a pairing inspiring "hate" is stupid as fuck, especially because it's some lame-ass middle school "my pairing is BETTER!!!11oneone" bullshit. I think Tanaka and Nishinoya together is ridiculous as hell, I think they're the perfect example of a platonic bromance if ever there were one, but do I "hate" the ship? No.
Y'all are just way too fucking invested in fandom, like to a scary degree.
Re: +1
(Anonymous) 2016-01-25 05:30 am (UTC)(link)i mean, i mainly spend my time bonding over things i like with people, but sometimes it's kinda fun to shit talk things? this isn't even specifically a shipping thing. sometimes there's a character or movie or tv show i don't like, and it's pretty fun to rant about it.
also, like i said, people have different reasons for shipping things. for me, the reason i don't ship things has less to do with characters being ~mean~ to one another or even actively trying to harm one another. the ships i hate tend to be ones i find boring or there's a character in it that i strongly dislike.
maybe someone hates asanoya not because they dislike the characters but they don't like the idea of them being in a romantic relationship. maybe they're, like you mentioned, a tanaka/nishinoya shipper, and so they don't like asanoya.
idk. i feel like when most people have an otp, they tend to view it as a superior. if they're polite, they probably don't go around verbalizing, but i feel like this is a pretty natural thing. i think it's fine to hate things as long as you don't go around harassing people about it.
Re: +1
(Anonymous) 2016-01-25 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)Yeah, I could understand if there were abusive or huge age gaps, but literally every character is a teenage boy acting like a teenage boy. It's a light hearted, funny sports manga. How hard to you have to twist something to justify legit hate?
I know there are those rabid contrarians who hate on stuff just because it's popular and have to dig for reasons to justify their hate, but come on.
Re: Honestly...
(Anonymous) 2016-01-25 05:36 am (UTC)(link)OP here
(Anonymous) 2016-01-25 07:17 am (UTC)(link)Mainly, what I mean is I don't get why Asasuga (and Asadai) for that matter isn't AS popular as Asanoya. Subtext is king, of course, and I can definitely see WHY people ship Asanoya, but after their respective introductions and they both come back to the team they practically stop interacting altogether (and Noya becomes obsessed with Kiyoko). All told, Asahi has (at least by my count) much more meaningful interaction with Suga and Daichi (especially that hug, be still my heart). In his introductory chapters, almost every time Asahi thinks about/looks at Noya, he ALSO looks at/thinks about Suga. It's just as subtext-laden.
And I'm obviously not "wallowing in misery" over a fictional pairing from a freakin volleyball anime, but c'mon, no one can deny the pain of the rarepair OTP.
NAYRT
(Anonymous) 2016-01-25 09:27 am (UTC)(link)Honestly OP you sound like you've got rarepair goggles on. I don't like or dislike Asahi/Suga but there's no denying that Asahi and Nishinoya have the bulk of the subtext, and they had a majorly emotionally charged background. I mean, Nishinoya quit playing because of Asahi. While Suga is cute and sweet to Asahi, I think the deal is that he's cute and sweet to everyone. I could just as easily say Suga/Hinata is the One True Pairing if you go by your criteria. When someone is just naturally sweet to everyone, it becomes less special than if they're focused intensely on one person. Asahi and Nishinoya were focused pretty damn intensely on one another. Those beginning episodes/chapters are what sold pretty much everybody on AsaNoya, and then Nishinoya's continued fanboying keeps it afloat. I think you might be reading a bit much into Noya's thing for Kiyoko too. Tanaka does it too, and it's obvious it's supposed to be comedic relief, neither boy so far is seen as having the slightest chance at her, and they act more like she's their idol than an approachable girl. (I'm personally ambivalent about KiyoYachi, but that's pretty much the only time we see Kiyoko act like anything other than the silent type.)
So, I mean, from somebody who honestly doesn't really care either way, I'm truthfully even having a hard time picking up on the subtext you're seeing. To be honest I would say Daichi and Asahi as a pair have loads more subtext before I would even consider Asahi/Suga. It's a rarepair for a reason OP, and I don't mean that in a mean/vindictive way. (I ship Taketora/Tanaka like burning, but that's a super rare pair too, and it's rare for a reason.) Suga and Daichi both are kind of like the team mom and dad, and considering how many people OTP those two, and how many people OTP AsaNoya, isn't it kind of easy to see why Asahi/Suga is kind of by the wayside? If you were talking about a couple like Kuroo/Tsukishima where there's like no subtext and yet the entire fandom is in love with it, I could see where there would be legit issues, but you ind of see like you're denying the major amounts of subtext that Asahi and Noya got specifically with one another only.
Re: NAYRT
(Anonymous) 2016-01-25 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)I have no attachment to any ships but I always felt like Asahi had a stronger bond with the 3rd years while Noya had a stronger bond with Tanaka. Noya and Asahi relationship felt more important with their introduction, but kinda faded out. I can't even remember anything of importance happening between them after their introduction. I feel that way about a lot of relationships in this manga.
I agree that KuroTsuki's popularity is weird. Then again I never cared for any of Tsukki's relationships because I think he's a smug asshole, even with that character development.
Maybe I'm just bitter because I always thought Furudate was shit at portraying friendships and his minimalistic way of showing it never sat right with me. Like, he'll introduce something as being important, then downplay or forget about it later.
