Oh, I know we should not speak of the sequel, but I found a free copy of it and I read it. Not a good book. But did you ever see the TV movie? I'd seen a TV movie of Scarlett years earlier with Timothy Dalton (way to un-charisma Rhett, Timothy!), and I remember at some point Scarlett ended up getting raped and there was a trial, so Rhett could swoop in all protector-ish, and it was like the baddest of bad fanfic. So, reading the book many years later - it still wasn't a good book, but I was like, WTF? What happened to the whole rape thing? Seems weird that that was added in for a TV movie.

Wow, that's odd. I barely remember the book, mostly just bits, like Scarlett hiding in a...haystack? or something? in Ireland and being cold and wet, and somehow meeting up again with Rhett who was...gunrunning? I dunno.

This synopsis talks about some other things in the book that just made boggle (her child is a manifestation of a demon? WHAT?) and seems unhappy with how the mini-series deviated.

Oh, jeez. Timothy Dalton. He is just...not good. I don't think i ever actually watched the mini-series. Dear gods - Sean Bean is in that. And Colm Meany. *boggles* The trailer makes me cringe.

You're remembering the end of the book, where Scarlett hid in a tower on her property, because the local Irish came and burned down her place for being in league with the English (I think), and because her daughter was possibly evil, too. You know how these things are. I think you're mistaken about Rhett - he was a gunrunner during the war, but was probably a Legitimate Businessman (TM) by then. I can't remember what. Maybe horses? Anyway, the plot required him to be there for Scarlett and their demon child, and so he was.

Timothy Dalton, I feel like he must be a good actor and that I've seen him be a good actor in something, but he was not a good Rhett, and I also think he was a crappy Bond.

Sean Bean must be the bad guy. Colm Meany was some priest guy.

If I found Scarlett on Netflix, I don't know if I'd waste the time hate-watching or not. Even younger uncultured me thought it was no good, back in the day.

Man, it's all a blur. That book was just so *awful*.

Have you ever read 'The Wind Done Gone'? I have no idea if it's a good book or not, it doesn't seem to have a lot of the GWtW storyline to it.

Poor Sean - always the bad guy! Hehehe.

I just...do not think I could force myself to sit through those awful accents for three hours or...however long.

Nope, never read "The Wind Done Gone". I'd heard about it in terms of copyright law, and the legal fight with the Mitchell Estate, but not much aside from that. I'd kind of presumed that meant it wasn't very good but more of a gimmick, although that may not be a fair assessment. But, fair or not, I do find that most of these spin-off books (there's a bunch based on Jane Austen's books as well) trade on the fame of the original source material, and rarely measure up. They seem like legal fanfic AUs.

The reviews seem to be *very* mixed, so it's hard to say. It also seems like the very first of it's kind, being followed by 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies' and other such titles.

I may have to read it some day.

There was a point where Scarlett was playing in a haystack with her child, which might be what you're remembering as well.

The child wasn't a demon, but all the Irish people thought she was because she was born on Halloween and (more importantly) brought by C-section by a woman the locals considered to be a witch. So the whole lore was that Scarlett was supposed to have a boy, but the witch delivered the baby and stole the baby boy and left a changeling girl.

(I have to admit I actually kind of enjoyed the book. It's not my favorite ever, but it's a brain candy read for me.)

It was just too melodramatic for me, too...dare i say...fan-fictiony.

Actually, cesarian sections date back to at least ancient Rome (although a quick check informs me that Julius Cesar's birth by c-section is only a myth that's most likely untrue).

And by the late 19th century the chances of the mother actually surviving the procedure were still low but not impossible.

Not that this makes the story any less melodramatic...
