Personally I love the idea of hearing all kinds of wild theories and non-canon ships and all that about my own characters. I always have to laugh when people argue against fanfiction and whatever else by going "how would you like it if it was your characters?" Yes, please!

Same. I'm not an author (not nearly creative enough for that) but I think I'd have a ball watching others play in my sandbox if I were. It'd be so fun to see where people went with stuff I made.

Well, I can get the cringing when fans bring up shipping and such with creators. It is just weird.

But I don't get why anyone would be proud of shipping something. It isn't like an accomplishment or anything.

I've seen a few fandoms like Lackadaisy where the author made jokes about noncanon pairings, but QC was the only one where the author actually seemed angry about one. What was that all about, anyway? Why was it such a big deal to him?

I don't know about which pairing it was, since I dropped QC a while back, but it's probably because Jeph Jacques is a giant bag of dicks. He gets upset about anything that isn't exactly what he wanted.

I get the thing about not wanting to bring up ships to the creators, it kind of makes me cringe a bit, but I like my 4th wall between fandom and tptb intact.

Meh, ship what you want. As long as you're not harassing the creator about the ship, no one really cares.

I can understand not wanting the creator to know what you ship, but honestly, what are the chances that will actually happen? Are you in like a small webcomic fandom where the creator regularly interacts with fans? In most fandoms there isn't much chance of this happening, I don't think.

Mocking your fans is a good way to lose said fans. (e.g. making Freeman and Cucumber read that slash fic? Massively poor taste.)

Unless the writer has absolutely stated "no fanfic" then I don't see why it's not okay to enjoy what you enjoy with other like-minded folks in a quiet corner out of the author's earshot.

Eh, it's ok I don't really tell people who I ship either, just because I know it's kind of annoying unless you both ship the same stuff. Just enjoy what you like in secret, nothing wrong with that either.

As a creator, if I find out that someone has actually shipped non-canon pairings in my work (slash or het), I will think I've arrived.

Ship away, OP. If creators get shirty about it, that's their problem, not yours, as long as you're not pushing the ships onto them IRL.

I'm a little confused about the wording of this secret but if you're worried about anime/manga authors being shocked to hear that people are drawing porn of their work and shipping- don't be. they know. it goes with the territory in japan.
