Here are my recs:

The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher: A Shocking Murder and the Undoing of a Great Victorian Detective by Kate Summerscale - It's about a specific historical crime, but it's also about the early days of detective work and how it developed.

The Princes in the Tower, by Alison Weir - When Richard III came to power, his two nephews (Edward V of England and Richard of Shrewsbury, Duke of York) were imprisoned in the Tower of London, only to disappear. History assumes they were murdered, but by who?

The Indifferent Stars Above: The Harrowing Saga of the Donner Party by Daniel James Brown - Most people have heard of the Donner Party and their attempt to cross the Sierra Nevada Mountains that ended in death and cannibalism, but this is a fascinating account of their journey and the aftermath.

The Beautiful Cigar Girl: Mary Rogers, Edgar Allan Poe, and the Invention of Murder by Daniel Stashower - On July 28, 1841, the body of Mary Rogers, a twenty-year-old cigar girl, was found floating in the Hudson River. Her death grabs headlines and inspires an Edgar Allan Poe story called "The Mystery of Marie Roget" that was also one of the first fictional detectives, C. Auguste Dupin. This book is just as much about Poe's career and the state of journalism in the mid=1800s as it is the murder. Good stuff.

That last one sounds really interesting. I love Poe.
