Sea of Glory: America's Voyage of Discovery, the U.S. Exploring Expedition, 1838-1842, by Nathaniel Philbrick: About the U.S exploring expedition that ended up naming Antarctica, and collected the basis of what would become the Smithsonian Institution.

The Essence of Style: How the French Invented High Fashion, Fine Food, Chic Cafes, Style, Sophistication, and Glamour by Joan DeJean: fun pop-history book about the origin of a lot of fashions things. As NPR puts it, "DeJean aims to prove that almost everything we think of as glamorous can be traced back to the 1600s and the tastes of French monarch Louis XIV."

Fromm's: How Julius Fromm's Condom Empire Fell to the Nazis. A fascinating look at an early contraception entrepreneur, his struggle to remain in business despite growing anti-Semitic policies, and how the Nazis destroyed the thriving business he built. An interesting look into the business atmosphere of Nazi Germany *and* early condom manufacturing.
