I grew up watching 80s cartoons. It still surprises me that there's shows out there that AREN'T merchandise driven.

Same. It frustrates the hell out of me that some shows don't even HAVE merchandise! WTF, let me love you with my wallet, show creators!

I did a bit more research on this franchise, and it was apparently meant to replace a lost revenue stream from Transformers merchandise. It explains a LOT.

Oh the bemusement of watching the promo episode of the original Thundercats cartoon, and noting that all the characters - seen naked originally - have the physique of dolls: not only completely smooth featureless crotches (fair enough, kids' cartoon), but also lines where the leg joints would attach. Yeah, totally not ridiculous and distracting at all.
