I've always wanted to show this to people who tell me things like "You are a special person inside and everyone will love you for you!" especially if it's in response to something like "I hope I get this job" or "I wish I had a boyfriend." I want to say to them "No! This is not actually helpful with regards to getting me the things I want and could actually turn me into an egomaniac! Telling me I'm special just makes YOU feel good!"

Yeeeeees. If I wanted my hand held and my ego-stroked, I'd call my mom. From everyone else I expect problem solving and recommendations. "You want a boyfriend? I know this single guy in your age range. Up for a coffee date?" "You're up for an interview? Want to practice? Want me to check my Linkedin profile to see if I know anybody at the company who can fill you in?"

Y'know, useful stuff.

I've found it very motivating (obviously), and I re-read it every few months.

Spite and the urge to prove people wrong/do it for myself*. Not waiting for someone to fix things, stepping forward and doing it myself (except when the way to fix it IS to wait.)


*Recently validated by my grandfather saying in a wondering/but ?sad? voice "...and you did it all on your own"
