Re: Non fiction book recommendations?
(Anonymous) 2016-01-26 12:27 am (UTC)(link)Do Not Ask What Good We Do by Robert Draper (about the 2011 US House of Representatives - really interesting and does a good job of not being partisan (basically, each side has jerks!))
Grant Wood: A Life by R. Tripp Evans (first biography of Grant Wood in about 50 years (spoiler, he was probably gay and his sister suppressed any works about him))
Guns of August by Barbara Tuchman ("celebrate" that we're in the WWI centennial with The Book on the origins of the conflict.)
After Visiting Friends by Michael Hainey (Family history/mystery about a man who's father died suddenly and in sort of weird circumstances. What I love most about it is that it gets into journalism in the 60s)
Going Clear: Inside Scientology and the Prison of Belief by Lawrence Wright (SO GOOD. This is what the HBO documentary was based on)
Emperor of All Maladies by Siddhartha Mukherjee (billed as a biography of cancer and it really is. I especially enjoyed the parts about the genesis of US cancer research organizations)
In Cold Blood by Truman Capote (true crime classic! Although sort of borderline fiction, since he apparently did embellish a lot. But I still love it)
The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace by Jeff Hobbs (biography of a young man who had this rag to riches story but ended up being killed in a drug deal gone wrong. It's written by his former college roommate and manages not to be preachy)
The King of Vodka: The Story of Pyotr Smirnov and the Upheaval of an Empire by Linda Himelstein (good excuse to drink while reading)
