Starting yesterday, one side of my throat became super-inflamed and I have trouble swallowing. If it's still doing this tomorrow, should I assume it's not going away on its own and see a doctor?

Yeah, I'd say so.

Yes, better safe than sorry. It could just be from sinus drainage down the back of your throat and localized to one side, I've had that before. It could also be an inflamed tonsil or strep, which can be serious.

Yep. Might be strep throat and the longer you let it go, the worse it will feel.

Could maybe possibly be a tonsil infection, which will probably also cause high fever and general terribleness. If it's caused by bacteria, you'll need antibiotics. If it's a virus, there's no proper medication and the doctor will just tell you to suffer through it... but actually you can boil water, add a lot of salt to it, wait for it to cool down somewhat, and then gurgle it. Repeat a few times a day. This tastes terrible, but it's surprisingly effective. And after suffering through several cases of viral tonsil infections every year, which lasted at least a week each, figuring out that saltwater cures them in a day or two felt like a life-saver.

Actually, it's useful for throat pains in general. It's a good idea to see a doctor anyway of course, but if it turns out they can't help...

Yes, PLEASE SEE A DOCTOR OR GO TO AN EMERGENCY ROOM because I don't want your throat to close up! (anxious Anonymouse imagining a worst-case scenario for you...)
