"I thought it was cool to see a villain who wasn't sure he wanted to be a villain, usually that's a trope saved for the hero. You know: 'my father was a hero/warrior/king, I'm supposed to follow in his footsteps, but I don't know if I can'."

I love the emo/hot topic jokes, but this is pretty much how I see him. People making too many political allegories are really missing the point imo. It's more mystical than that. He definitely is responsible for his actions yes, but the force is something that can be used for both good and evil. I think he was just really power hungry and like you say is trying to live up to his potential, but by the worst means possible.
