[Star Trek: The Next Generation, Wesley Crusher]

I didn't get the hate either but then I also had a crush on him when I was young and that was 99% of the reason I even started watching trek >.>;

I think a lot of people don't realize Wesley helped get a whole lot of younger fans into the show (maybe they didn't want younger fans into the show but hey, we're all old/adults now.)

Hating Wesley was the stuff of con panels when the show was airing. The kid was a Gary Stu before the term was coined, and everybody knew it, including the kid playing him.

I feel the same way. I first saw TNG when I was a kid, and while my favorite character was Riker, in my dreams it was Wesley who would be my best friend if I ever made it to the Enterprise. He made everything more accessible somehow.

Though I will admit that when I first rewatched TNG years later, as an adult, I did find him a little grating. But I can't hate him, because my inner child is still so fond of him.

I think Wesley-hate really depends on what age you were when you watched the show. I was in my teens so it was *so embarrassing* that they let a kid do stuff and he had to be smarter than everyone etc etc, what if someone thought I *liked* him?

I've always been a fan of his sweaters.

I didn't have an issue with him much as a kid other than the fact that my older brother was wayyy into him.

Now I sorta see the problem isn't that there was a kid aboard the Enterprise but that he often made the adults look like idiots.

He wasn't a bad character in moderation but for a couple seasons he was way overused, Alexander doesn't get the same level of hate, neither does Jake or Nog.

You're doing it right.

I was always pretty much the same age as Wesley when the show aired and I still found him so annoying. If I wanted to watch a show about kids, I'd watch a show about kids. But I hated those, I wanted to watch shows about adults.

This is me, as well.

Honestly, this was probably the exact reason the writers put him in the show.

I liked him when I saw it at 9 years old because he was young enough that I found him very pretty. He and Whoopi Goldberg were my second/third childhood crushes (James Spader from Stargate was my first).

I never watched the show, but I think the idea of hating on a character just because they're young (provided they're well-written and well-acted) is dumb. People like characters with whom they can identify, and young people shouldn't be forbidden to have identifiable characters just because some hoity-toity older people are offended about it.

Wesley seems to have been really divisive in terms of identifying with him. My SO loved him when he started watching in his early teens: here was a smart, curious kid, able to talk to, prove himself, and study with the top-notch adult crew around him, getting to see the universe, access technology, and meet a sweet girl. When I started watching I was then about the same age, but I could barely stand him: here was a smart, curious kid, but he overstepped boundaries, was almost always right when everyone else was against him, stumbled only when doing something unprecedented, and literally evolved into a higher being (and in doing so arguably left someone in a position to die because it's no longer his journey, or something). This list does make me think, though, it's maybe a bit less the core character himself that grated on me, but his use.

I've heard this argument a lot, but it's... not true? Wesley was nowhere near as right all of the time as fans like to think. He was only right when they needed to push him forward (like to justify him being on the bridge). He caused trouble and mischief way more often.

Sadly the fact that kids relate to the character is what a lot of people will use as evidence that he sucks.

He's one of those characters who's really awesome from a child's point of view, but from an adult's point of view, he's a Marty Stu.

The secret is adorable though. It made me grin, not gonna lie.

I didn't feel too strongly about him one way or the other. But he was sorta cute.

Yeah, I liked Wesley, too. Didn't image hanging out with him though.
