How do you know if you did the right thing?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Typically I approach things with a pessimistic attitude, this shit's doomed to fail, and then I get to be pleasantly surprised when things go right.

So... I made a big decision, and I'm a little freaked out because I can't decide whether it's a good thing or a bad thing. I just don't know what's going to happen. I would like it to work out in my favor, but I can't decide which way it'll go. Is that how it's supposed to go, or should I continue to be worried?

Sometimes you just have to make a decision and live with the consequences, nonny. You make the best decision you can based on the information you have at the time, and move on.

You never can tell.

I think there are two things to talk about here. One, how do you tell you're making the right decision. Two, how do you deal with worry and anxiety. And I really think those are in a lot of ways two separate things. Because there's always going to be worry and uncertainty at times in life - often even if you have done the right thing.

So on the one hand: how do you tell if you're doing the right thing? You just kind of have to wait and see and evaluate how you feel. It might help to try to explicitly formulate your goals - write down on a piece of paper or something where you're trying to go, what you want in your life - in realistic, broad terms - and then use that to think more clearly about where to go. Or, it might not. But at some point I think you just gotta trust your feelings. There's no guide book out there.

On the other hand: how do you deal with worry? And that's a whole topic of its own - one that I frankly could use a lot of work on - but I would advise looking into things like mindfulness, CBT, meditation, or even therapy.
