Re: Your imaginary home

I want a super-historically-accurate (but with modern plumbing and electricity) Roman villa of the sort that a really wealthy Roman family would have had. Super fancy with an awesome garden in the peristylium that features a fake lil island with a tiny scale model of the villa on it :D

I also want a massive Victorian Painted Lady with fully restored interior and preferably a bit of land under it. Modest desires, aren't they?

I think Roman Villas are so cool. I've always thought it would be interesting to have something along those lines (although not so historically accurate) that looked like a totally non-descript, not necessarily residential building on the outside in some random location, but was actually a luxurious house inside.

I remember seeing some floor plans from Pompeii and villas could have these smaller rooms or clusters of rooms with outside doors that did not connect internally to the main part of the house and were probably spaces rented out as shops and apartments. It's weird to think of what was essentially a big mansion with these little shops and apartments tacked on the sides. It's not so different than a fancy apartment above a street-level store in a big city, though, just not what you usually connect with a more sprawling structure.
