I'm with you. I'm not into Twilight. I was outside the target demographic when it came out, but I can't pick on Twilight fans because when I was a teenage girl, I totally would have eaten it up with a spoon. Because when you're young and stupid, a guy like Edward sounds swoon-worthy, not creepy.

Plus, I'm a firm believer when it comes to kids and reading, just get them reading. Get them to enjoy one book and from there, steer them towards better ones. Kids may be more likely to read books in their free time, if they stop thinking of it as a chore or sanctimonious adults stop lecturing them about what they should like.

Completely agreed with this.

Plus, getting a variety of stuff to read can be helpful, too. Kids can learn the difference between certain styles of writing, good writing versus bad writing (mind, that can be more of a subjective opinion sometimes, but still, it's a good discussion and debate to have nonetheless), different genres, etc. That'll bode well for them both in school and beyond. Especially if they want to pursue careers in writing.

This, exactly! More teens would probably read if they were allowed to read what they wanted - while also strongly encouraged to give other books a try.

Yeah. I was way too old for Twilight when it came out, and I've never been all that interested in romance novels. I read the first one out of curiosity, but never read any of the others or saw any of the movies.

HOWEVER. About the same time the last movie came out, a friend of mine hooked me up with a copy of the book EVERYONE I KNEW (including me) just HAD to read in ninth grade.

That book was "Flowers In the Attic," and believe me, all the Twilight fans would be fully justified in lining up to laugh in my face. I still grew up to be a fairly productive member of society so I don't think it did me any harm, but oh my god that was a terrible, terrible book. (Yes, I read the next one, and possibly one more later title in the VC Andrews brand, but by time I read the last one I knew perfectly well they were terrible.)

So yeah, I got no room at all to complain about kids liking Twilight. I'm pretty sure incest is just as creepy!

So true about V C Andrews and that book! I never understood why, out of all the books, that was the one "everyone" read.
