LOL, same here. Those words get mixed up a LOT in fics :p.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I feel your pain! I hate using those words in writing because even after double and triple checking, I'm still paranoid that I used the wrong one. It's not like I don't know the difference. It's just that damned R.

I have the same problem with the word "lose". I always stop and notice that it wasn't wrongly written as "loose".

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I have the same thing with "wary" and "weary".

That one drives me crazy. So many people do it!

(I also look for the lose/loose and breath/breathe ones too, but wary/weary bothers me the most, I think.)

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
"Definitely" and "defiantly" can also be added to that list.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
What do you mean, check? I would have thought that contexts where 'prostate' is the right word would be fairly identifiable straight off the bat. If someone is prostating themselves on the floor or if a penis is hitting someone's prostrate, it's clearly wrong, no? What needs checking?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
+1... I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the OP, but this secret did confuse me.

I guess there have been times when I'm reading a book and I see the word prostrate, and after reading it once my eyes will flick back to it just to check that there's three 'r's, simply because I think it would be funny if that were a typo, lol.

da

Reading a book that's actually been legitimately edited, sure. In fanfic, though? This mix-up happens a LOT.

OP - I'm with you, except the incorrect usage bothers me too haha...

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Anon the anon you're replying to replied to. I know the mix-up happens, I'm just wondering what needs checking when you come across it? Unless the context is very confused, isn't it obvious whether the word's wrong or right from the get-go? What the secret said:

I can't finish the sentence until I look to see if the writer has incorrectly used the word prostrate instead.

Look where? What I mean is, what are you checking the word against, if not the sentence it's in?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

I didn't post the secret, but I assume the OP just meant going back to that part of the sentence and re-reading it to see whether the correct word was used; when quickly reading I often don't notice a very similar switch like that. Kind of like that thing where you can read the scrambled words because the first/last letters are the same...

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
For me it's wary and weary, or bemused and amused.

What I got out of this secret: that is a really weird statue.

Cool, at least from this angle, but weird.

Yeah, I used to see that one a lot.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see it as much any more. Slightly off-topic, but sometimes someone uses prone (lying face down) incorrectly and that really throws me off. I guess some people just mix it up with supine (lying face up) or something.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Of course the writer can avoid it altogether by having the character lie prone. (Or supine, if he's lying on his spine.) No need to lie prostrate!

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
Well, we know what kind of fic you're reading!
