James was a bully as a teenager because he was stupid and immature and jealous of Snape in particular, not because he was a completely malicious person. People like that can grow out of it. Anyway, who's to say he wasn't punished for it? Maybe Lily persistently getting angry at him for it 'punished' him enough to bring him to his senses. Maybe Lupin eventually grew enough of a spine to shake him out of it. We don't know all of James' story after all.

He was also a bully because Snape LITERALLY HUNG OUT WITH A GROUP OF NAZIS.

Does that make bullying him okay? No, but he sure as hell wasn't picking on Snape just 'cause. I know a lot of good people who, in their teens, when they didn't understand how being a good person worked, would pick on legitimately horrible bigoted people and treat them like shit because they felt they deserved it and were also kinda puffed up and thought they were ~so awesome~ for sticking it to the horrible people.

That's a wrong assumption because no one ever deserves to be bullied, but the logic of "bully him 'cause he's weak" is VERY different from "bully him because he's an awful person who supports bigoted magic nazis who want to kick all the muggleborns and halfbloods out of society."

TBF, Snape didn't actually join them until maaaaaaaayyybe 7th year, earliest? Yeah, he hung around a group of bigots and dipshits, but he wasn't an all-out Death Eater until much later.

ayrt

Yeah that's right, hence why I amended myself while typing to say "hung out with" and "supports" nazis rather than "was a nazi." :)

Snape joined up with them in part because of his situation. James was an asshole to him long before it and it's disturbing that you're justifying bullying.

reread their comment anon

"Does that make bullying him okay? No"
"That's a wrong assumption because no one ever deserves to be bullied"

pointing out greys =/= justifying bullying
