Bullies that don't get punished keep bullying all their lives

Source please

(Seriously I don't think there's anything in human nature that says someone can't mature and grow up, and there's several years of things that we didn't see that could have led James to grow up and mature and stop being a bully, and every indication in canon is that he did, so this position of yours seems a little silly to me, but)

I don't have the books so I can't check, but wasn't Sirius almost getting Snape killed portrayed as a wake-up call for James? Between that and seeing that his bullying made Lily mad it's safe to assume that he did grow up and stop being a bully.

(And even if he didn't, I can't see Lily taking any abuse from him, especially if any of it was directed toward Harry. She literally died to protect her son, after all. If James was a danger to him I don't think she would let that happen.)

This whole "James must've been abusive toward Lily" wank has to stop. It's super creepy. There is absolutely no evidence to suggest such a vile slur.

+1

James was a bully as a teenager because he was stupid and immature and jealous of Snape in particular, not because he was a completely malicious person. People like that can grow out of it. Anyway, who's to say he wasn't punished for it? Maybe Lily persistently getting angry at him for it 'punished' him enough to bring him to his senses. Maybe Lupin eventually grew enough of a spine to shake him out of it. We don't know all of James' story after all.

He was also a bully because Snape LITERALLY HUNG OUT WITH A GROUP OF NAZIS.

Does that make bullying him okay? No, but he sure as hell wasn't picking on Snape just 'cause. I know a lot of good people who, in their teens, when they didn't understand how being a good person worked, would pick on legitimately horrible bigoted people and treat them like shit because they felt they deserved it and were also kinda puffed up and thought they were ~so awesome~ for sticking it to the horrible people.

That's a wrong assumption because no one ever deserves to be bullied, but the logic of "bully him 'cause he's weak" is VERY different from "bully him because he's an awful person who supports bigoted magic nazis who want to kick all the muggleborns and halfbloods out of society."

TBF, Snape didn't actually join them until maaaaaaaayyybe 7th year, earliest? Yeah, he hung around a group of bigots and dipshits, but he wasn't an all-out Death Eater until much later.

ayrt

Yeah that's right, hence why I amended myself while typing to say "hung out with" and "supports" nazis rather than "was a nazi." :)

Snape joined up with them in part because of his situation. James was an asshole to him long before it and it's disturbing that you're justifying bullying.

reread their comment anon

"Does that make bullying him okay? No"
"That's a wrong assumption because no one ever deserves to be bullied"

pointing out greys =/= justifying bullying

James enjoyed pissing off the Dursleys. He was still someone who liked to antagonize people who he deemed beneath him.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
So the standard we're demanding here is perfection?

The Dursleys were some of the most small-minded bigots ever. Martin Luther King himself would have been tempted to give Vernon Dursley one right in the kisser. That's a fact.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Who WOULDN'T want to piss off the Dursleys?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
this made me laugh out loud and i agree entirely

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
He didn't even actually do anything to purposely piss off the Dursleys. He laughed at Vernon's bigotry against him and that pissed off the Dursleys.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
The Dursleys were shitty, awful people who abused their nephew as soon as they had the chance. You're really, really reaching. They also gave as good as they got to James.

God, I fucking hate crazy Snape fans. They ALL come out with this stupid shit, trying desperately to trash James to make Snape look better. James sucked as a teenager. He got better when he grew up. Snape never did (although he remains a fascinating, multi-faceted character). End of story.

Oh no, he wasn't sweet and polite and inclined to sit there and take it when small-minded assholes were being small-minded and assholish. How...completely normal and human of him, that monster.
