(Seriously I don't think there's anything in human nature that says someone can't mature and grow up, and there's several years of things that we didn't see that could have led James to grow up and mature and stop being a bully, and every indication in canon is that he did, so this position of yours seems a little silly to me, but)

I don't have the books so I can't check, but wasn't Sirius almost getting Snape killed portrayed as a wake-up call for James? Between that and seeing that his bullying made Lily mad it's safe to assume that he did grow up and stop being a bully.

(And even if he didn't, I can't see Lily taking any abuse from him, especially if any of it was directed toward Harry. She literally died to protect her son, after all. If James was a danger to him I don't think she would let that happen.)

James was a bully as a teenager because he was stupid and immature and jealous of Snape in particular, not because he was a completely malicious person. People like that can grow out of it. Anyway, who's to say he wasn't punished for it? Maybe Lily persistently getting angry at him for it 'punished' him enough to bring him to his senses. Maybe Lupin eventually grew enough of a spine to shake him out of it. We don't know all of James' story after all.

I would like to believe that James matured and when he got married and became a Dad realized what a jerk he had been. I don't believe Sirius ever matured. Even in canon he was a ass to Harry by trying to get him to do something dangerous and that James would have done it.

Absolute horseshit. I know it's fashionable nowadays to say that bad people are intrinsically bad and evil and can never change, but it's utter, unadulterated horseshit. It's just a way to maintain one's sense of self-righteous victimhood without ever having to do the hard work of empathy, education, forgiveness, or any of the other things that actually matter in the real world.

I, like a lot of people, did stuff at a teenager that, in hindsight, was bullying. I feel lousy about it now, and I make sure to never do anything like that any more.

James Potter is basically Mitt Romney.

When Mitt Romney was in college he and his friends bullied this kid that was gay; he had long hair and Mitt Romney had him and his friends held him down and cut his hair while the kid screamed for help. He was the rich and popular kid and he picked on those beneath his social status quo, just like James did to Snape.

Now would Mitt do something like that NOW? No, but he's still an asshole. If the Potters had a pet James would probably be the type to put it on top of his car (if he had one) while it shit itself on a road trip.

(Not that animal abuse isn't bad but that is like, one scene, where his mistreatment of his students is a constant throughout the books.)

The only times we ever see James Potter with his family (and other people he loves, his friends), he's nothing but caring and supportive. He even tried to apologize to Vernon Dursley after that disastrous dinner, even though he was easily the one LEAST in the wrong, because the fight upset Lily.

So there goes your argument pretty much.

Personally, I will never understand fandom's way of putting things into perspective on James. Okay he was a teen that bullied another teen. This somehow makes him worse than the fully-grown man who bullied children less than half his age, over whom he was in a position of power, and that's after he joined the terrorist group and knowingly gave up a baby to be murdered?

You're probably trolling, but I'll say this anyway. There are bullies who chill the fuck out after high school, and either forget about being assholes, or develop some serious remorse for the shit they did to someone when they were kids.

People aren't unstoppable forces or perpetual motion machines, OP, and "punished" can mean a wide range of things. There are assholes who grow out of their assholish behavior, usually via some sort of epiphany, or by addressing the problems that's causing them to act out in the first place. What turns them around isn't necessarily a big dramatic life moment, sometimes it's just realizing that you're a grown up and need to change some shit about your life.

And not to be cliche, but sometimes having kids of your own is the wake up call bullies need to realize that their behavior was shitty and unacceptable. I was bullied myself in school, and I see quite a few of my former classmates shaping up their lives. I don't always forgive them, of course, but it's not productive for me to pretend like they can't possibly change (barring a huge correction) when EVERYBODY changes over the course of a lifetime.

I got into Harry Potter late and mostly stay out of fandom, this is my first time seeing a Snape stan first hand. Do you also think Lily is the one wrong for not forgiving Snape and marrying the terrible bully instead? Are you married to him on an astral plane?

Most bullies just grow up and become working stiffs like the rest of us. Not tormenting the workplace, or picking on children, or kicking the homeless. Just driving to work, coming home to their families, having the odd drink with friends and colleagues, and occasionally remembering that they were a bit of a dick at school.

I think the one safe generalization that can be made about people in general is that nobody likes who they were as a teenager.

You sound like you have some issues, OP.

Look, I've been bullied in school. Funny thing is, I get along with most of those people now, and it turned out that while I felt I was being bullied, they *also* had the feeling they were being bullied (while they only dimly remembered bullying me), and THEN it turned out that another kid apparently felt they had been bullied by me, and I never would have seen it that way!

I don't know about your history, but mostly the group dynamics at schools are multi-layered and complicated, and it's hard to assign good and evil just like that.
Now this is not meant to blame the victims. It's to avoid stereotypization of "culprits", which is what you are doing.

My advice: get some perspective if you're already out of school and still feeling victimized. Wallowing in your righteous suffering may feel good for now but it will make you a bitter asshole in time, so get some therapy or an equivalent, do some sports or other movement-based stuff outside in the sun, and face your former bullies in a safe environment.

If you're still in school, hang in there, it'll pass. Seek counseling or other attention from teachers if you feel something has to be done about it. If they can't help you, there are two probable causes.

a) they're irresponsible uncaring asshats (but just look at the boy. he's fat, and probably because he wants attention from his mon. I hear she's recently divorced. that just makes him act up and kids will turn on him <- actual quote)

or

b) (in school scenarios much more likely from my experience) they feel that you would not profit from their intervention but actually be targeted more, OR they feel that they can't help you because the actual bullying part is very minor and the problem is that your low self-esteem and general teen-ness makes you much more vulnerable to it, i.e. you're 80% victimizing yourself, in which case the best course would again be to seek couseling, therapy, distraction, and not intervention that calls out others.
