Snape bullied 11 year old children when he was an adult man. James was an idiot kid. It doesn't excuse the things he did and Snape could rightfully hate James forever if he wanted (as he did). Just because your fave wasn't a totally irredeemable doesn't mean he was on the path to sainthood.
