Because the Slytherins were all pureblood racists, yeah.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
And you're dodging the question.

Show me an example of Snape showing prejudice to a half-blood as an adult because of their parentage.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
He certainly bullied them, and he was certainly unwilling to defend them from the racist depredations of his charges, so it's just really difficult for me to see his commitment to the principles of anti-racism.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
So again you don't have an answer.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I gave you an answer. He was a racist and there's no strong evidence that he ever stopped being a racist.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Except for the time he explicitly told someone not to use a racist term in his presence.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
You can be a racist and still understand that it's bad form to use the n-word. That proves nothing.

NAYRT

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
So how does the fact that one of his main targets, Neville Longbottom, is a full-blooded wizard, fit your "he's racist" narrative?

To me, it proves he's an ass to students of all non-Slytherin backgrounds: Harry (half-blood), Hermione (muggle-born), and Neville (pureblood). Looks pretty equal-opportunity to me.

Re: NAYRT

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Well, he was also a bully (in addition to being a racist), and Neville seemed weak.

Re: NAYRT

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Soooo basically you have evidence that he didn't target muggleborns moreso than anyone else -- and that the one he was the worst two was in fact a pureblood -- and in addition to the fact that he frowned upon someone using the word 'Mudblood' when he was in private...and he's still a racist?

Re: NAYRT

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Fair point. I'll accept we don't have any evidence that he's specifically a racist still - just that he's cool with racists.

Don't forget Ron, also full-blooded.

Snape was an ass to Gryffindors in general.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
That seems like an answer to me. At one point Draco was openly hoping for the murder of every Muggleborn in school via Slytherin's monster, in CoS. He was speaking at the top of his lungs in Snape's class, Snape did nothing to stop him, even smirked at one point. I agree I didn't see much commitment to non-racism from Snape.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I just skimmed through a PDF file and I only saw him say it when he was alone in the common room. Can you point to the exact scene (I.e. chapter)?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
It's one of the chapters in CoS after Hermione's petrified, where Draco says something like "I hope the next one dies. Pity it wasn't Granger"

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. That's the scene where Harry and Ron take the Polyjuice potion and are in the common room. Wasn't in class. Snape wasn't there.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Oh for--
it's chapter 16 of CoS. Way after Harry and Ron take the Polyjuice Potion, when Dumbledore's left the school. It's in Snape's class specifically. Snape literally just walks by Draco spewing anti-Muggleborn rhetoric and does NOTHING, even smirks and encourages the boy, or at least allows him to keep speaking.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
"Now, now, Malfoy," said Snape, though he couldn't suppress a thin- lipped smile. "Professor Dumbledore has only been suspended by the governors. I daresay he'll be back with us soon enough."
"Yeah, right," said Malfoy, smirking. "I expect you'd have Father's vote, sir, if you wanted to apply for the job - I'll tell Father you're the best teacher here, sir -"
Snape smirked as he swept off around the dungeon, fortunately not spotting Seamus Finnigan, who was pretending to vomit into his cauldron.
"I'm quite surprised the Mudbloods haven't all packed their bags by now," Malfoy went on. "Bet you five Galleons the next one dies. Pity it wasn't Granger -"

Snape had already walked off at that point. He was smirking because Malfoy was sucking up to him.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
"I always thought Father might be the one who got rid of Dumbledore," he said, not troubling to keep his voice down."

Like how you left out that bit, but mm, no. Draco was speaking pretty loudly and he was the only one in class speaking. There's no way he didn't hear him just because he took like, 3 steps away.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
"I told you he thinks Dumbledore's the worst headmaster the school's ever had. Maybe we'll get a decent headmaster now. Someone who won't want the Chamber of Secrets closed."

Damn c&p, forgot this bit because it was definitely said when Snape was in earshot.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Again -- it should be pretty fucking obvious from the Deathly Hallows what Snape actually thought about Dumbledore and how it differed from his public persona in front of the other Slytherins.

Even if he didn't hear him then, I think it's a bit of a stretch to assume that none of Slytherin House's constant open thirst for muggle death never once got discussed around him

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Oh FFS -- it was pretty clear in Deathly Hallows that the two had a close relationship and Snape answered directly to him and that a lot of what Snape was doing was to be kept secret. To argue now that he relished the idea of Dumbledore being sacked is silly.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
You're seriously trying to pretend THAT was the relevant part of the quote I posted? The relevant part is how loudly Draco was speaking, Harry made a note of it. Less than two seconds later, Draco talks about the Chamber not being closed, and shortly after that goes on about Mudbloods dying. There's no mention of him lowering his voice.

My point is it's delusional to argue that Snape "just didn't hear Draco!" Snape's relationship with Dumbledore has nothing to do with it, the point is that Snape clearly heard the shit Draco was saying and made ZERO attempts to stop him, even encouraged him or at least indulged him.

You mean where he shouted "You'll be next, Mudbloods!" in the middle of a crowd in a hallway at Hogwarts? That's pretty memorably unsubtle to me, and even McGonagall didn't immediately slap that little shit upside the head which she totally should've done.
