This is why snape stans are the worse - who cares about snape's systematic abuse of children, he was bullied as a teenager :c

Or…we recognise that a pre-teen isn't necessarily the most reliable narrator and that what you poor, deluded snowflakes call bullying really isn't. Oh, poor Neville's boggart was Snape? Seems to me that Neville grew up to be quite the badass and wasn't trembling in his boots by the time he invaded the Department of Mysteries with Harry. And widdle Hermione got all upset when Snape mocked her teeth? But didn't she somehow turn that to her advantage?

Grow up. Or learn what bullying is.

Being antagonised by a teacher is NOT the same as being bullied by one. A teacher can be caustic and sarcastic and not be a bully, but that nuance seems to be lost on you. And I'm not protecting Snape from any accusation of wrongdoing. He clearly had a bias against Gryffindors and favoured his Slytherins. He was not unbiased in the classroom, though the marks he awarded seemed to be fair. I do and will refuse to call him a bully, though. That's the popular Tumblr opinion of the day and I refuse to subscribe to it.

Are you fucking kidding me, even Rowling has called Snape a bully repeatedly in interviews and on Twitter.

If I treated my students the way Snape treated Hermione and Neville, I would be fired for abuse of authority and bullying. Snape is a marvelous character. He's a lousy teacher and not a very good person.

I'm reading OotP with my son. Yesterday, we got to the part where Harry turns in a potion he made and Snape purposefully knocks the bottle to the floor breaking it and then awards Harry a zero for the assignment. Do you honestly think that's fair?

I know that in that scene Snape was angry that Harry had seen his private memories in the pensieve, but Snape is an adult and should be capable of handling his anger better than that.

Snape is a fascinating and complex character, but he was also absolutely a bully.

So, because Neville and Hermione didn't develop PTSD as a result of their treatment at Snape's hands, it wasn't really bullying?

You are making it very difficult for anyone who wants to view Snape with any level of nuance to be taken seriously. Like the whole black-and-white always-and-only-evil thing in this thread is bugging me but I can almost understand it reading this comment.

Snape was a horrible bully to a bunch of students. The fact that Hermione and Neville were both really badass doesn't even begin to negate that.

For the record (I'm one of the anti-Snape posters ITT) but I don't think that Snape was always-and-only evil. I think he was morally complex and I respect his sacrifice. But that doesn't diminish the magnitude of the extremely awful shit that he did, and that's the point that I'm trying to make. He was a pretty awful dude who also did some pretty courageous, heroic stuff, because people are complicated.

But he DID bully his students. That's a fact.

I completely agree with you. This is a good assessment.

I wouldn't say I'm pro-Snape or anti-Snape overall, but I find that conversations about Snape bring out a lot of really angry people on both sides of the black-and-white coin.

I guess I worded my comment the way I did because I'm going through the thread in order and saw a lot of "Snape is evil!" comments that totally miss the point and then I encounter this comment up there and just went "...bwah?" He was definitely a bully and denying that is like denying Dumbledore had a beard...except grosser and a bit frightening.
