Stylistic devices you like in fanfiction

Not the topics, plots or tropes but the stylistic choices - like tenses, POVs etc. - which do you really enjoy in fanfiction?

I confess: I like 2nd-person POV, but only when the "you" is either a canon character or is an in-canon OC (not the reader).

I really love it when my favourite character is not the POV character. For some reason, I really prefer seeing them through the eyes of other characters. Related to that I also really, really love outsider POV type fanfic- it's too damn rare, sadly.

outsider POV is great.

Ooh yes, I love that.

I know everyone hates it but I love when people use the way paragraphs are arranged to convey emotions. Things like
spacing
words

out

to show shock, or smushingeverythingtogether to show someone is thinking very quickly/panicked.

But every time it comes up, the general consensus seems to be 'ew'.

this is something I like very much when it's done sparingly and context-appropriate. Otherwise, it's a fic, not a modern poem (unless of course it is modern poetry, in which case carry right the fuck on!) and readability is paramount.

But I DO use this on occasion.

I can't stand books written in poem format. At all. But I've found this kind of format is absolutely stellar when I'm trying to write an anxiety attack. Writing out how I feel when I'm in a state of absolute panic just doesn't flow as well in normal verse.

Does epistolary fanfic count, cause I LOVE me an epistolary fic, especially when it has some good formatting so they look like actual emails or whatever

I like them except that they make terrible podfics. ;_;

I love epistolary fic. Some people even create images with postcards and handwritten journal entries and it's so satisfying to read.

Generally, I like 3rd person, past tense, limited omniscience. For romances (and sometimes other types of fics that center on more than one person), I like if the story was evenly split between the two romantic leads so I can see both of their perspectives. But it has to be done well (and not look like a RP where the same ground is covered twice). Otherwise, it's easier for me to follow if the fic is tight on one character only.

I also like a lot of dialogue (in-character) and when there are short sentence-paragraphs that are used to emphasize a point.

I like third person, past tense. I can't stand fics written in any other POV. Oddly enough, I perfer novels written in first person, present tense.

I do like a good first person narrator, one with a distinct voice that sounds like an actual person telling you a story. I do think it works better on short stories rather than longer works, but I really like it when I find one done well.

i like it when an author shows the same thing happening but from both character's perspectives. So Chapter 1 is Character A's POV and Chapter 2 is Character B's POV.

It can be done badly and I cringe if it's just the exact same thing written. But when done well I adore it.

I like it when that is used to highlight different things. I agree that it shouldn't be exactly the same thing just with different names and pronouns.

NGL, I read "stylistic devices" as "stylish devices" and went, "Omni-tools look cool! And there's always the Portal gun!"

I like outsider POV, as long as it sticks pretty close to canon.

I know a lot of people here hate it, but I love it when in intense/hectic situations, sentences lose structure and words start running together into one word. It really hammers home the frenzied feeling of the moment for me.

When I'm reading, I like third person omniscience. I also like a good First person limited omniscience as well (like you only see/hear the narrator's thoughts.) The tense doesn't matter, as I like both, as long as it stays consistent throughout the story. The same goes for when I'm writing, except I tend to lean towards third person omniscience, past tense.

I'm not a fan of Second person, because it throws me out of the story, especially if it's saying "I'm" doing something I'd never do in real life.

Normal third person. Everything else annoys me.

Past tense, third person limited omniscience.

I also like if someone is able to play around with characters not knowing everything in an effective manner. It's something I have come to enjoy in RP, since my characters often don't trust some of the most well-reputed Light characters and thus don't know if they are truly Good.
