I'll be very surprised if my family's dog is still alive in the morning. She's in renal failure. If she makes it through tonight, it's likely the decision will have to be made in the next 48 hours to put her down.

I feel awful for being a little relieved. That poor dog's suffered enough, and kidney failure is a fucking awful way to die.

Choosing to put her down peacefully rather than letting her suffer longer is a responsible and caring decision. No reason to feel ashamed. I'm sorry you're in this situation.

I'm sorry. Poor thing. Losing a pet is awful. I hope you are able to make her comfortable and that you are able to make the right decision and not beat yourself up about it.

I very much understand that feeling of relief. Been there. It makes total sense to feel that way. Nobody wants to see someone they love suffer, be it a human or a pet.

Still, I'm sorry that your family and your dog are going through this all the same. Putting a pet down in this situation may be the right thing to do, but that doesn't make it hurt any less.

That sounds similar to how my previous cat died. We knew even before we brought her to the vet she probably wasn't coming back home with us. It's awful, but seeing her suffer was worse. I'm tearing up just thinking about it. Go give your dog a hug while I attempt to pull myself together again.

My last cat passed from the same thing. It's not a fun way to go. In the end I chose to let her go as peacefully as possible, on my bed in the spot where she loved to sleep.

My advice is to say your goodbyes and then call someone in to your home to help her pass. It's so much kinder than a drawn out length of suffering.

Agreed, particularly to "call someone in to your home to help her pass." When one of our dogs was dying, we called the vet to come to the house, because we wanted the other dog to know that she was gone, and not always be looking for her. That was the primary reason to have it done at home, but also because it's where my pets are most comfortable. Dragging them off to the vet, where they're anxious, just isn't a nice way to end things.

When our other dog died a year later, we still had the vet do the house call, because it's so much easier on the pet and us.

A lot of my friends were surprised to hear you could get a house call for putting down your pet, but if you can afford it, I do recommend it.

Thirding. The dog I grew up with died at home and we made the decision. We actually scheduled it a few days in advance based on how her condition was. We fed her all kinds of fast food shit that weekend, then the vet came on Monday. She (the dog) haaaaaated the car, it made her anxious and upset, and we didn't want her to die that way.

I was the one who first suggested the house call, and at the time I wasn't sure, but I'm not surprised the vet did it, and it seemed like something she was used to doing.

That's one of the factors in my last rabbit's death. Once renal failure is happening it is the best to let them go peacefully before it distresses them too much.

It is fine to be relieved, to have the suffering stop.

There's nothing awful about feeling that way at all. It's a very natural reaction, and a loving one.

As my mother always said whenever pets died, "We gave them a home full of love, which is all a pet wants, and they'll go knowing they're loved."

I'm sorry you guys are going through this... losing an animal is devastating. I've been through it and it's heartbreaking; still, if she's in a lot of pain and isn't able to live her life in any fulfilling way, then it makes sense to let her go. That just...doesn't make it any easier.

I wish you guys the best.

I'm sorry you're going through this. As awful as it is, if she's suffering having her put to sleep is the kindest thing you can do for her at this point so you don't need to feel ashamed at all.

I'm sure she's had a wonderful life with you and your family and I send many internet hugs your way.

Don't feel awful about that. Watching a pet suffer is heartbreaking, and it sounds like it's the right thing to do.

I'm so sorry. I hope she goes peacefully and surrounded with love.

I'm so sorry to hear this. My faithful cat died at the Vet on Monday. It was during a follow up to see why she wasn't eating or drinking and I guess she knew it was time. Her heart was enlarged and it stopped.

I'm sorry that you're going through this. :( We gave our dog oreos before he was put down, and he really enjoyed them.

Re: cw: pet death

[personal profile] lady_dragoon 2016-01-28 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
She loves Oreos, too. But she's even refusing white chocolate (her favorite food on the planet), so it's definitely time to make that decision. Though I'm hoping she goes peacefully overnight.

If she's alive in the morning, her scheduled appointment is going to be to get put down instead of the planned sub-cu fluids. I don't want her to suffer any more than she is right now.

I'm sorry. That's really terrible. I hope she can find comfort when the time comes.
