Re: Things you assume about authors based on the stuff they write

Depends on the milestone. I was reading by the time I was ...I'd guess around 2 and a half to three years old.

I mean, not reading full sentences, but starting to read words. That's waaaaay the fuck beyond what's normal for a 2-3 year old.

I taught myself how to read at four so I get it, but that's the thing: Your case and my case, they are unusual. And if our stories showed up in fanfiction, I would expect them to be treated as such. But they usually aren't. It's usually 'oh yes, Emily was speaking complete sentences by 10 months, we won't comment on this, nothing unusual here."

That's fair. I think my point was Sherlock is supposed to be the super genius of all super geniuses so it's not toooo terrible to have him develop quickly.

But yes, treating that as if it's normal is just plain incorrect.

Oh, there's the problem! My fault, I didn't mean literally fic about baby Sherlock, I was using his name to reference the fact that all babies in fic seem to be super geniuses.

Ohhhhh I get you now.

Yes, but you see, that's because no one actually knows how to write a baby that is not a "tiny adult". Well, ok, some people do but they probably aren't writing fanfic.

Yep. And I think a lot of it also has to do with them giving a character a baby and then realizing that newborns are boring and therefor rushing all the milestone so they can have giggling cuteness. You can always tell they don't have kids.

Out of curiosity, do you have any source info on normal ages for kids to start reading at different levels? Google isn't being very helpful here. I sort of feel like it's not that unusual for 3-year-olds to read words (I'm pretty sure I did, I remember reading Green Eggs and Ham with my mom at that age, but that's one anecdote) but I'm not sure if there are actual stats on it.

Oof, sources. My information comes strictly from my old psych textbooks that put the average age of beginning to read (i.e. normal development) at age 5-6. According to that information, language milestones for children ages 0-3 are mainly phonetic, 4-5 some reading and writing... etc.

I guess it would depend on the individual, but I think the prevailing wisdom is that if a child hasn't "taken" to reading on their own by age 5 they should be actively taught. Starting before (or at) 3 years is definitely out of a normal range, supposedly.

I kind of wish I had bothered taking developmental psych, because I could probably fact check that better than not at all.
