I'm 29, but I still love Anime, like most of the other older people who commented here do. I usually just do my own thing, say please and thank you, and avoid drama like the plague.

If you feel THAT uncomfortable, maybe you can look into some series that are older, but well known (Gundam Wing, Sailor Moon, Dragonball Z, Inuyasha, etc.) Those anime have quite a few older fans by now, so you'll have an easier time finding adults/mature people to interact with.
