I'm 21, in anime fandom, and most of my fandom friends are the same age as me or older. Yes, there are lot of pre-teens and teens that are into anime, but maybe you just aren't looking hard enough?

It really depends on where you look.
The anime community on reddit for example, while not perfect, is mostly full of adults and is mostly open and accepting.

Anime fandom really does skew younger. It did back when I was preteen in the fandom, and it's still that way now. All too often with anime, fans don't grow with the fandom, they move on to live action or literature or comic fandoms.

I can't blame them. Anime is brimming with juvenile characters and there are too few adults to relate to.

I see no flaw in this. I was very into manga when I was a teen but abandoned it when I got sick of the sexualized young characters and really into police procedurals. I've since gotten into it again but I don't involve myself in the fandom since it seems to skew young.

I think a lot of older fans don't like to actively participate in fandom/can't keep up.

Like I would say I'm an anime fan but I don't really interact with the fandom outside of drawing pieces of fanart here and there (though my fanart is usually for really old series.)

I don't have the time to keep up with every new anime out there any more, so I'm also super late to most popular series. One thing I found in trying to talk to anime fans who are super active in fandom, is that a certain portion of them will start talking about crap that you've never heard of and they WON'T STOP. When it got to the point where I had no idea what animes people were talking about anymore, I stopped describing myself as an anime fan to people I don't know.

But there are a lot of adult fans, I think you have to look for us outside of the main fandom though.

Yea, I have trouble keeping up with everything tbh. TV, games, comics... And I haven't been into anime heavily since my teen years, so when people mention all these new series...I don't recognize many, and even those are mostly things I know through osmosis or fell behind on. I've always been a more casual anime fan, so much so that I feel weird saying "I like anime" because most the time I don't know what people are talking about.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I was more heavily into it as a teen but when I was a teen it felt like there were less series going on (and there was DEFINITELY less getting brought to my country, I basically survived through fansubs.) I spent at least a few years knowing what was popular and watching anime constantly, but it became too much to keep up as an adult.

Now it's like, I get in the mood to watch anime every once in a while but I rarely watch new stuff, and the new stuff I do watch is often a bit on the old side because it might just be something that hit netflix recently.

I definitely feel like to classify yourself as an "anime fan" to people you don't know there needs to be some knowledge of current stuff, otherwise you're just sitting there blinking at a person and in my case being like, "Hey, remember this anime that came out 20 years ago? That was great."

but when I was a teen it felt like there were less series going on

I feel that way too. Maybe I wasn't aware of everything that was available, but I find it just as likely that now more shows are being translated (and sooner); anime did blow up, so it's more common now.

There was a time where when you talked about popular series, there were a handful. Now every 'season' it feels like there's 50 shows.

I get in the mood to watch anime every once in a while

That's me.

"Hey, remember this anime that came out 20 years ago? That was great."

Haha, yea! I'm mostly stuck in that time too. (Yu Yu Hakusho, Rurouni Kenshin, etc)

This is why I'm a little more hesitant to go to anime cons these days. I did when I was in school, but since I've fallen off the bandwagon regarding anime, it just...doesn't exactly feel right anymore. :/

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I am in your exact same situation, OP. Well, close enough. I'm 22, and my main fandom is an anime fandom.

I also prefer tumblr as a fandom space, so that doesn't help...

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I'm 38 and still enjoy anime. Granted, most of it is older anime, not this rash of moe stuff...

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I'm 28 and like moe stuff, what does that make me :(

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
a qt

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt

what's a qt?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
say it aloud

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
definitely a qt

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
It makes you a younger anime fan than me. Nothing wrong with liking moe stuff, it just doesn't do anything for me.

I'm 28 going on 29 and I still love anime (despite me being one of those casual viewers and has trouble keeping up with what's hot nowadays in the anime world) and I've found a few online friends who are the same age as me or in their early 20s-30s that are still enjoying anime. Some of them are cosplayers even and that's a lot of fun too.

I turned 31 last year and wish I could talk to more adult fans, not because of elitism, but because talking to preteens makes me feel like a creep. So don't feel bad, OP. There's people out there your age that would like to speak to other people their age.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
I get what you mean, OP. I'm 31 so, in my eyes, you're pretty much fresh out of the cradle yourself but whatever. I get you and I don't go into anime fandom spaces because from what I've seen, it's a bunch of kids. Sometimes I'll chat with my adult nephew about it because he's into anime but I'm more on the fujoshi side and he's definitely on the magic girls side of things.

I'm 29, but I still love Anime, like most of the other older people who commented here do. I usually just do my own thing, say please and thank you, and avoid drama like the plague.

If you feel THAT uncomfortable, maybe you can look into some series that are older, but well known (Gundam Wing, Sailor Moon, Dragonball Z, Inuyasha, etc.) Those anime have quite a few older fans by now, so you'll have an easier time finding adults/mature people to interact with.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
I'm almost 31 and I'm still into anime, older fans are out there. Just...maybe not as visible?

Though I'll give it to you, I noticed since I got into a fandom for a novel recently and started looking up fanfic for it, the general quality of fanfic writers in anime fandoms versus literary fandoms is...depressing. It's really clear that a lot of the kids putting out fics for anime have barely touched books.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
32 and into anime. I follow some tumblrs for pretty fanart, but there really isn't a place to discuss manga & anime anymore anonymously. The tumblr culture is one where you have to state your age, sex, gender, mental health, physical health and sexual preferences. Yeah, no thanks. You teens keep it, I'll sit here and miss LJ's anon community culture.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-29 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Anime fandom is pretty shitty though. It always has been.
