Wait, people use those statements as a "defense." Geez. Yeah, I like writing fanfic because I like writing fanfic.

You'e seriously never heard someone in the throws of being looked down on for being a fanfic writer retreat to "honing my craft" and the like?

No. I typically avoid that kind of drama because it pisses me off.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-29 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
avoiding it does not equate to never hearing it.

Okay. I don't recall ever hearing it because I tend to avoid conversations in which fanfic and fanfic writers are being attacked and must be on the defense. Of course, memory is infallible, so I may, of course, once been privy to a conversation in which the phrase or concept in question was discussed.

Can I look down on them for not knowing it's spelled "throes"?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-29 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. Me too. Writing fic for the sake of fic is good enough.

OP

Yes. I see a LOT of "defenders" of fanfic stating variations on the following:
"not everyone has the [time/energy/talent] to write[/publish] original fic - and that's okay!"

...Like, fanfic is only 'okay' because some people have limitations, and if nobody was limited, then nobody should write fanfic, nor want to write fanfic. Because obviously it's not truly a worthwhile pastime on its own, but it's 'okay' for those poor schlubs who can't do any better. And it's common knowledge that all fanfic writers would really prefer to be doing 'real' non-fandom writing if only they could.

That's so annoying. Like, embrace the fact that you like writing fic and that transformative works such as fic are a valid and time-honored contribution to fandom communities. When your defense is "well, I can't do any better," then you are essentially diminishing the work you are doing and fic as a whole.
