Wait, people use those statements as a "defense." Geez. Yeah, I like writing fanfic because I like writing fanfic.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-29 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
You'e seriously never heard someone in the throws of being looked down on for being a fanfic writer retreat to "honing my craft" and the like?
fingalsanteater: (Default)

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2016-01-29 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
No. I typically avoid that kind of drama because it pisses me off.

Can I look down on them for not knowing it's spelled "throes"?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-29 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. Me too. Writing fic for the sake of fic is good enough.

OP

(Anonymous) 2016-01-29 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. I see a LOT of "defenders" of fanfic stating variations on the following:
"not everyone has the [time/energy/talent] to write[/publish] original fic - and that's okay!"

...Like, fanfic is only 'okay' because some people have limitations, and if nobody was limited, then nobody should write fanfic, nor want to write fanfic. Because obviously it's not truly a worthwhile pastime on its own, but it's 'okay' for those poor schlubs who can't do any better. And it's common knowledge that all fanfic writers would really prefer to be doing 'real' non-fandom writing if only they could.

I think writing fanfic because you want to is great. But I do tend to (gently!) respond to fanfic writers who seem to be under the impression that it's good practice for being a professional writer someday. It's better than not writing at all, but being too immersed in how fandom does things doesn't adequately prepare you for a non-fandom audience.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-01-29 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
That's assuming you write for fandom, not for the desk drawer.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-29 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
It's helpful because it's writing for an audience. Writing in a workshop/circle is good for refining technique.

it is only good practice if you push yourself and don't fall into the lazy habits of assuming everyone already knows about the canon and what everyone looks like and so on and so forth

otherwise, I agree with you. And am glad you try to be gentle about it. (I just wouldn't be able to manage.)

I do write fanfic as writing practice, but to be fair I also like writing fanfic.

But oh no writing fanfiction is something only the worst internet deviants do so let's all wring our hands over it and hide our shame in black plastic.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-29 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, I love the back and forth I get with readers. That's great fun and much easier with fanfic, especially with a WIP, than original fic. Also, yeah, I like writing fanfic.

I've not see too much of this but I'm basically the same, I write fanfic because I find it fun.

I write it because I can write stuff in it that I can't in original fic.

Hm, haven't seen much of this personally. I like both. Some people do write fic as practice / honing, and say so. Some people do say "I write fanfic because I like to, and I don't have the time or interest for original fiction." I guess I just haven't seen a lot of nastiness about it, but I'm sorry you've had to deal with it.

There's nothing wrong with writing what you enjoy! It doesn't have to serve some 'greater' goal in life. If only everyone could have a hobby they enjoy that is so fun and cheap. (In general, I think writing is one of the cheaper forms of entertainment. I know I get a lot more out of it than many paid things.)

I like how cheap it is too. It was a shock when I picked up knitting and suddenly had to pay money all the time to keep doing it after spending years writing basically for free since the laptop I use was bought for other purposes.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-29 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Completely agreed with this post. I know some people have complained about how, when people they know find out they write fanfic, are like, "Why aren't you writing original fiction instead?" Like writing stories isn't worthwhile unless you're planning to make money off it for a living. They can't seem to comprehend the idea that for some people, writing stories is a hobby, just like many other hobbies.

Myself, I do hope to get original work published someday, but whether I do or not, I'll still keep writing both that and fanfiction simply because, like you said, it's a fun activity :). I've been writing ever since I was little, and it's something I've always enjoyed doing, so I'll keep at it. Simple as that.

I think for me, personally, it seems that back when I started in the late '90's, fanfiction was a new thing. So fanfic writers got bashed on a whole lot more for "not putting their energy into original work". Even today, fanfic writers are looked down on by those who are published.

Kind of like how "vanity publishing" is losing its insult factor since self-publishing is all over the internet. It used to be if you were vanity published, you weren't published. You had to have a contract with a "proper" publishing house to be a writer.

Some of that old thought process still clings to my psyche since I heard it enough times back in those days. Even today "you're good enough to be published!" still smacks of that prejudice. Yes, people give that as a compliment to fanwriters.

So yes, I do write fanfiction for fun. However, I've had to "justify" my writing fic enough times, I admit it comes out as a rather short "I have no interest in being formally published."

(Anonymous) 2016-01-29 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I usually use those arguments with my mom because she has a dim view of fanfiction.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-29 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I don't why it's so hard to understand that people write fanfic for fanfic's sake.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-29 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so with you there, OP. I have no drive to try and create my own worlds, but I love writing fanfiction. If people want to shame me for that, then that's their own problem.

For some people, like me, fanfiction isn't a means to an end. Fanfiction is endgame.
