I don't even understand why people need to identify with the player character in the first place.

Because the player is in control of the character of the game. You influence their actions or decisions. It's a lot more involved than movies or shows.

You don't HAVE to identify with them but it's pretty cool for an escape fantasy.

That is why people like decision based RPG's.

This is me. I don't have to identify with a character to be invested in, and entertained by a game(or any other media.), I just have to like them.

Me neither. As long as they're interesting and well-written, they could be a genderless purple blob and I would be able to identify with them.

ugh this, exactly. I never understand this "identify with" thing, not in games, not in movies or shows I watch, none of it. I just want to like the character enough to enjoy moving them around their little world while I finish the game, I don't need to feel like they're a representation of me or like I could pretend I'm them.

I can't help think of my POV on characters, both in fanfic and games. They aren't me. They are a character I make up. In games, sometimes the way the game functions can inform me of who they are and give me ideas of what is going on in their headspace, but they are still not me.

Understanding my characters is not something that has to be restricted by gender.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-29 09:30 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. I don't WANT them to be me, because that would be boring. I want them to be a character in their own right.

I'd be more sympathetic to this argument if it was directed at guys who I guess need every video game protagonist to be generic white man #43454322332131 instead of women who bring up wanting to see themselves represented in games and etc
