Re: What are you reading?

1. Herman Melville's short works (stories and novellas)
2. The Waste Books (i.e., commonplace books) of Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, 18th century German mathematician and the first real "aphorist" in the German language
3. William Maxwell's "They Came Like Swallows" and "Time Will Darken It" (checked them out of the library and am looking at them on my coffee table as I type, but haven't worked up the will to read them yet)

I forgot Melville wrote anything other than Moby Dick. Do his shorts focus on the sea?

Some do and some don't -- how's that for an answer? :). I just finished "The Piazza" and "The Bell-tower", which are not sea tales, but in the same volume are "The Encantadas," "Benito Cereno," and "Billy Budd," which are. "Bartleby the Scrivener" is also not about the sea (it's set in a NYC law office).

I'm kind of in love with Melville now. His mind is a lovely place to hang out in, so to speak. He's funny and charming and cheerful, and also very insightful and profound, while still loving humanity even with all our weaknesses. I wish I could go back in time and be his friend or something...

You've convinced me. Adding him to my to-read list.
