What are you reading?

[personal profile] iceyred 2016-01-29 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I'm reading an old book about ancient American civilizations. It was published by Time back in the 70s. Pretty fascinating stuff.

What're you reading?

Grunts.

It's actually better than it looked like it was going to be, but Jesus does Mary Gentle not get tired of all the words?

Isn't that one a mockery of standard fantasy fare? She might be pointing out the absurdity of long fantasy series.

Or her editor sucked. Either/or.

I'm going to pick up "Sherwood" by Godwin Parke from the library today. I have no memory of why it's been on my to-read list for two years, but why not?

Sounds like it might have something to do with Robin Hood.

A classic tome, that. Filled with drama, wit, and pathos.

Whatever floats your boat. Sounds like something that would lead to good investments, and good investments lead to nice retirements.

King's Quest Companion

Then I'm going to reread Medieval Lady Death

Ugh, case deleted my comment, so I'll post it again.

I'm reading "Yeah, you sound real fascinating. Go back to fucking dogs or reading porn of it, don't mess up your little brain trying to learn." It's an awesome book, even if the title is a bit long.

Dead Wake, which I think is a pretty good Larson history.

I just finished The Shotgun Arcana, which felt like it had middle-book syndrome, and I can't quite get over the really bad Temple of Doom treatment of Kali.

Okorafor's Lagoon is probably going to be my next lunch read. It was a Christmas gift.

Rereading Haroun and the Sea of Stories because I recently got my mom to read it and in talking to her I realized I didn't remember it as well as I want to.

1. Herman Melville's short works (stories and novellas)
2. The Waste Books (i.e., commonplace books) of Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, 18th century German mathematician and the first real "aphorist" in the German language
3. William Maxwell's "They Came Like Swallows" and "Time Will Darken It" (checked them out of the library and am looking at them on my coffee table as I type, but haven't worked up the will to read them yet)
