Re: What is pandering done *wrong*?
Although personally I would have taken out her and Legolas, he was mostly pointless too.
Re: What is pandering done *wrong*?
(Anonymous) 2016-01-29 01:29 am (UTC)(link)I think part of that is that they were basically filling the same role. Tauriel is supposed to be Captain of the Guard but Legolas is the one shown ordering the guards. Tauriel is the one who makes the speech about going after evil but then Legolas is the one who drives the narrative in Gundabad and with Bolg. Legolas is the prince but Tauriel behaves and is treated like the stereotypical rebellious princess (seriously, if you read Thranduil as her father and not her king, then his actions regarding her might make a hint of sense).
And, the kicker for me, is that Tauriel's characterization is basically Legolas' from the book. He is a younger elf. He is super excited to see Lorien. He doesn't like dwarves but then does. He's a silvan elf. Etc.
I think if they were rolled back into one elf and their purpose was to serve Thranduil's storyline and not a love story, then you could justify the addition. But, really, Legolas should've been a cameo and nothing more.
