Writing a strong female elf character for The Hobbit, but giving her a crappy love triangle and making her share all her screentime fight scenes with Orlando Bloom.

And using her shitty "tru luv with a dwarf she met for like 3 minutes" to take time away from THE DEATH SCENE OF THAT DWARF'S BROTHER. Fili, you deserved so much more. :(

+1

I also noted that the production team seemed to actively work against the Tauriel character. Like, during the scene where she's banished, which should be this huge moment for her and reveal a lot about her character, she's shot blurry and out of focus behind Legolas. The focus isn't even on her.

And there are two instances where something momentous for her is going on and the camera only shows the back of her head. It's so clear that character development for her just didn't matter. She really is just a token female and nothing more.

I agree.

Seriously. I wish they'd just left out the token chick and let it stay a dudefest. That would've been less insulting and irritating.

I have this issue with token chicks in general. Let them actually do things.

Yes, this. Tauriel is such a frustrating character because she was completely wasted as a character AND because she took focus away from other characters without having appreciable payoff for doing so. (Like kaijin, I also have feelings over the way Fili's death got skimmed over to make time for the ridiculous love story ugh.)

I liked her but, yeaaaaaah. Ultimately she really did end up being the 'token lady' which was a bummer, I still think her overall design was very pretty though.

Although personally I would have taken out her and Legolas, he was mostly pointless too.

DA
I think part of that is that they were basically filling the same role. Tauriel is supposed to be Captain of the Guard but Legolas is the one shown ordering the guards. Tauriel is the one who makes the speech about going after evil but then Legolas is the one who drives the narrative in Gundabad and with Bolg. Legolas is the prince but Tauriel behaves and is treated like the stereotypical rebellious princess (seriously, if you read Thranduil as her father and not her king, then his actions regarding her might make a hint of sense).

And, the kicker for me, is that Tauriel's characterization is basically Legolas' from the book. He is a younger elf. He is super excited to see Lorien. He doesn't like dwarves but then does. He's a silvan elf. Etc.

I think if they were rolled back into one elf and their purpose was to serve Thranduil's storyline and not a love story, then you could justify the addition. But, really, Legolas should've been a cameo and nothing more.

Nailed it. They should've left Legolas out or given him a smaller role, and let Tauriel DO something besides fall in love/mope over some dwarf dude she just met.

I can agree with all of this tbh, especially with making Legolas a cameo.

Yes so much. I loved her in DOS. I didn't even mind the hints of romance with Kili. Then BOFA came along and the romance angle was the only thing to her story and was badly done, the triangle was even worse, and she barely showed any of her supposed actual fighting skill (having to be rescued first by Kili then Legolas). Ugh.

Pretty stupid move.
