Professional or not. Is there a forum or an online community you spend time in for this? I feel like my creativity is fueled by being around people I can share ideas with and this is sorely lacking in my life.

Sort of, if only because I'm in a writing group that formed online, but 80% of our interactions are RL. Which is more than fine by me; writer types are about the only species of human I don't feel awkward around, so.

I wish in some ways that I knew of good communities or forums to discuss writing, though. LJ seems pretty void of writer types these days.

A group of close friends of mine have a writing Skype chat. And a lot of other chats where we can talk about that stuff

You mean your imaginary friends.

Yeah, if getting people to react to you on the internet by following them around and repeatedly poking them is your idea of a normal pastime, I don't think I'm the one who has no friends.

AbsoluteWrite is pretty good. It's also really active compared to a lot of writer communities. There are a lot of writing subreddits that are good too. There's conversation to be had still on Fictionpress forums but it's glacial and intermittent for the most part.

NaNo forums works the best for me for creativity fuel, because everyone is so hyped and the lack of professional/publishing-orientation of it means it's a lot more fun and laid back than a lot of original writing spaces. Course it's only useful a few months of the year.

I'm currently posting on writingforums.org. It seems like a decent place so far--there are jerks, but they all seem to be relatively new and nobody sides with them in arguments.

Coming in late, but hopefully you'l still see this...

I co-admin the Romance Divas community. We have writers who are unpublished, who are published through small presses, who are published through traditional publishing, and who are self/indie published. Everyone is accepted.

Now, that does come with a caveat. If you're derogatory toward the genre, you will be warned, and if it continues, you'll be banned. But, I've been a mod or admin for about ten years and make no bones that I write science fiction and fantasy with romantic elements. If I took out those elements, the the story wouldn't work.

What I would suggest is to get involved, because the Divas will go to bat for each other. But they have to know you. There is also a (non-official) chat room that you can hop in. People do word challenges, set a timer, and you can turn the sound on or off. When it goes off, everyone announces their word (or page) count, and while it' s not required, a lot of people share favorite snippets from what they just wrote.

If you have ANY romantic subplot between your primary characters whatsoever, even if it's not the main plot, you can count it as "with romantic elements." We've also had some literary and straight-up fantasy writers. As long as you don't diss our genre, we're good. :)

If you're considering self/indie publishing, they're the best forum I'd recommend hands-down.

Absolute Write is a decent forum, but it's even harder to keep up with than RD, and I don't have the spoons. They are also anti-self publishing, BUT are looking at working through a publisher, they're probably one of the better place for advice. I will give my own advice here, though. If you should get a book contract, have an intellectual property attorney (NOT your agent) look over it for you.

Forward Motion. This is probably the least active, but the folks in chat are lovely, and they also tend to do word "wars (their parlance)", snippets (do specify if you want constructive criticism or encouragement; if it's a first draft, I suggest the latter, because the former can be harmful).

Not communities, but blogs of note:

The Passive Voice. It's an industry blog aggregator that collects various articles about publishing, and the comments are well worth reading.

Dean Wesley Smith. He's in a bit of an odd state in that he's run a publishing company, and is now making things work with self-publishing. He's got a lot of good advice, but don't take everything as gospel.

Kristine Kathryn Rusch, who talks about the business side of writing as a hybrid author. That is, she self-publishes some work, small presses others, and works with traditional publishing for others.
