It says the true name, but the true name for who is not specified directly by the naming system.

I personally like Frisk better.

It's pretty clear by the dialogue of the no mercy route that Chara is the first human and Frisk is the one in true pacifist.

But if both routes are canon, then both names are canon, so...

I'm still going to go with Frisk.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-30 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
That... makes no sense.

Chara is the first human. In the no mercy route, it's implied that Chara possesses Frisk. Chara does not possess Frisk in the true pacifist route, or at the very least, is not in control even if their presence is there. Chara and Frisk are two separate entities, and they are not the same.

I'm fond of the theory that Frisk actually died when they first fell and it was Chara the whole time in both routes, but it's only through being redeemed by your good actions in the Pacifist route that they decide to throw away their old name and take on a new name and life as Frisk.

That's a nice theory and I'd buy it if it weren't for the conversation Asriel has with the player at the end of the pacifist playthrough. Flowey/Asriel realizes at the end that the player was not Chara like they wanted to believe. Plus, the little bits of dialogue randomly through the game are pretty telling.

In pacifist, if the player looks into a mirror, it says "It's still you." As you progress through no mercy, it changes to "It's me, Chara".

You also aren't able to play the game if you name the first human Frisk. It initiates a special mode that ends after you beat Toriel.

+1

This is a much more thorough (and spoilery) explanation than I gave, but it is exactly what I was getting at. Frisk in the beginning of the game is essentially in a kind of Schrodinger-esque quantum state of being both Frisk and Chara; the endgame determines which one you get when the box is "opened", so to speak.

It makes perfect sense that if both routes are canon (and that is the implication) then either name is correct.

Even according to your own explanation.

Think of it like an AU thing where in one timeline the pacifist route happens and in the other the genocide route happens. In that case it is correct that the main character is both Frisk and Chara, so you could theoretically say either depending on which route you took.

That would make sense if you could actually play through the game naming them Frisk. You can name them Chara, but you can't name them Frisk if you want to play the game properly.

Oh no it's getting philosophical and spoilery in here

I was trying not to go into spoilers in the comments but... Here, I'll copy and paste what I just wrote above in response to another(?) anon:

Frisk in the beginning of the game is essentially in a kind of Schrodinger-esque quantum state of being both Frisk and Chara; the endgame determines which one you get when the box is "opened", so to speak.

Through the game you progress to points where you are essentially told which side you're veering toward, and which of the duality is the new core personality (ie. the mirror dialogue and dialogue with final bosses). In a normal rpg this kind of player choice is written off by getting dialogue that implies that whatever ending the player picks is generally the "true" nature of the character. In this case the contrary is actually implied if you take the pacifist route, since you are outright told that the character is not who s(he) assumed s(he) was (ie. Chara).

It's just one of the many subversions of the RPG tropes, and a way to subtly break the 4th wall by acknowledging that both routes are potentially the true, canon route.
