33. I can see what you mean. I love Death Note, but I stay far, far away from anything in the fandom. I know that I'll end up hating the series if I get involved in it. And yeah, I feel like I'm being elitist a bit, but so long as I get to enjoy the series I don't mind so much.

::EDIT:: 64. I concur 100%. I actually had a row with a boy in my History class over this (my History class is convinced the film is a faithful adaptation of reality, no joke ._.) because he was adamant that it was a Disney production just because it was animated. Gah.

33. I'm actually really surprised that so many people stay away from the fandom. It has it's tards, of course, but if it weren't for the fans I wouldn't love the series with the burning heat of a thousand suns the way I do now (and I ADORED it before joining the fandom.) Just curious--why do you think you'd end up hating it? I mean, what exactly could happen?

Also 64: Holy shit, your class thinks an undead evil monk tried to murder an orphaned amnesiac Anastasia? Even when it was recently revealed that her body was found and there's really no mystery anymore at all? AND they refuse to believe it's not Disney?! Wooow. Some people. [insert weeping for humanity]

33. I guess it's kind of hard to explain. I've had nothing but bad experiences in fandom since I left my first one (a bandom which broke down when the band split) and since then I've just been drifting around and I manage to end up in the most drama ridden fandoms ever, for some reason. So that put me off. The fact I've heard nothing good about the Death Note fandom (and I took a look and just wasn't all that thrilled by it in general) didn't really help. I guess I do feel like I can enjoy the canon without needing to do anything fandom-y - I don't feel the urge to read or write fic once I've read the manga, or watched the films. I feel like it stands well on its own. Obviously other people feel different and want to contribute to the fandom, which is fine by all means, it's just not my scene. This plus the fact school is slowly beginning to eat into my time (in the necessary, oh-God-I-Have-to-sit-Uni-exams in a few months way) and I need to have a good balance between my online life and my real life. Adding a fandom to that balance might tip it over a bit too much. So I'd rather stick for now to reading the manga in the bath for half an hour each evening and giggling at L's hilarious expressions, and then spending the rest of the night doing homework to the film soundtracks. (How cool am I XD)

I suppose the worst that could happen is I end up hating the series because of other fans (which kind of happened with Kingdom Hearts, except it's not so much a hate as a slow burning resentment, because the first game meant a LOT to me when I first played it, then I came online and discovered that all anyone seems to care about is Organisation XIII), which isn't the end of the world, and kind of petty I guess, but it sure would suck. Cause I love it a whole lot right now. And I'm easily frustrated by other people when it comes to things I love.

Then we have all the stupid personal issues I have these days about meeting new people through things like fandom and being paranoid about eveeeerything and it's a whole can of worms that just doesn't need to be opened.

But eh, who knows. I am open to the fact I may be totally wrong :D I'm just rather cautious right now, for all those reasons listed above.
