50/54 - yeah.... JK actually knew NONE of her characters very well. I don't give a shit if they were her characters and she could do what she liked with them - each one was a cop out in the end, and nothing like they should have been. Which also ties in with 54, because whilst losing respect for someone just because they think HP is the best thing ever is rather pathetic, JKs writing *is* horrible! I'm no English expert, but some of her sentence structures make me cringe, bigtime. Its a shame, as it is a brilliant story/idea underneath all of that, in the hands of someone else....

(but I still like Harry Potter. So there)

JKR had a great idea, but she didn't have the writing skills to really take the series where it could have gone. If she'd teamed up and coauthored those books with someone who had a good technical writing skill, the Harry Potter series would be bloody brilliant.

Personally, it made me kind of sad to read the last few books in the series -- all that potential for awesomeness just got wasted.

[identity profile] angelberries.livejournal.com 2008-03-01 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely - you have it right there. The sheer volume of people disappointed in the outcome of their favourite characters - and not just in ships, in all aspects - speaks volumes about her character development. She made those characters, sure..... but she didn't 'know' them.

IMHO the last book was quite predictable, I was saying for years beforehand that she'd do a 'sneak peak' into their future, Harry dying then not dying was obvious to happen and the fact that she just killed off characters in such a random fashion just ruined it really. Sure, characters had to die, but so many? Really, come on.

In short..... someone rewrite it PLZKTHX?

Thank god someone else agreed with the OP. I like the first ones alot, they are written to the age of the character but the audience grew with the books and she still kept writing for 11 year olds. Not to mention that just about everything she did with the characters was a huge cop-out.

[identity profile] angelberries.livejournal.com 2008-03-02 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. Its true, the last few books are pretty much a garbled mess! I have written a huge long paragraph to another commenter about my thoughts and reasons on all of the cop out if you want to check it out. Its a bit boring though. haha!

I'm going to apply the fatal hand of logic to this and ask: How did she not know her own characters? Didn't she, you know, create them? Just because they don't fit the fandom depiction of them doesn't mean that they're wrong.

[identity profile] angelberries.livejournal.com 2008-03-02 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
It is true, Fandom has twisted the perceptions of these characters a lot for some people, but the way I see it - she used her characters to do what she wanted, rather that what they would actually do if they were 'real' Take Snape for example, secret 50 has it down really. He was a bastard, he was horrible to Harry, and instead of saying, what would Snape do? and fitting that to the story, she used him for what seems to me, a pretty OOC purpose that a 'real' Snape would never have done. Being in love with Lily *is* a cop out ending for him, if he truly loved her, would he have acted like that to Harry all those years? (no matter how much he hated James, Harry is still part of Lily, the girl he supposedly loved over everyone else.... you don't treat someone like that!!!) and Hermione and Ron - the golden Trio were like brothers/sisters, not marrying material! I feel Hermione would have married someone of her mental equal, of which there isn't in the series (you know, save Dumbledore) Ron isn't her equal, he isn't challenging to her - something a person like her NEEDS. A 'real' Hermione would get bored with someone as.... unintelligent as Ron, and would be very bored, very unstimulated in such a relationship. And the ending of the book - Ron/Harry rehauled the MOM and took over, did they? I don't think so. Neither had the intelligence and drive to do such a thing - Harry might have been able to help perhaps, but they could no way have been able to re-arrange it all by themselves. Harry is too hotheaded, he most certainly could not have 'ruled' calmly, and Ron isn't intelligent enough. It would have been better for them (and the magical world!) to appoint other people to do it!

So in short, since I've rambled on a bit - she didn't know her own characters simply because.... she bended them to fit the story of what she wanted, made some act seemingly OOC and didn't ask herself what each character would actually have done if they were 'real' and fitted that to the story instead. A heck of lot of people were disappointed in the end of the series, and to me, its easy to see why. The way each character was treated is IMVO, quite disgusting.

This really sums up exactly how I feel. Thanks for saying it for me. Lol

Ron/Harry rehauled the MOM and took over, did they?

Actually, they didn't. That was Kingsley Shacklebolt who completely revamped the MoM, along with the adults. Harry and Ron did an overhaul of the Aurors. Please, at least try to get facts right before tl;dring about how they make absolutely no sense and are completely OOC.

50 OP

The reason my secret is a secret is that JKR does know her character better than I do-- from the first 6 books, I just drew a different picture from her hints. Just because I like my version of Snape better does not mean that her Snape is wrong. In fact, my Snape is wrong, and I acknowledge it. Her character, therefore she decides. I just wish it had turned out differently.

Well I dunno, I still think each character was a bit of a cop out.... so so many people were disappointed. For the record, I think your Snapes a closer representation of the character that should have been, I really do.
