27. The Doctor loves ALL his companions (even Turlough!), but that doesn't mean romantic love, or at least, it doesn't have to. I don't like Doctor/Rose because it invalidates the 40+ years of companions before her.

Plus, I think the Doctor being a Time Lord and over 900, sexing it up with a earth person would be either bestaility or pedo. I'm a subscriber of the Looms theory, so I believe the Doctor doesn't have a sex drive.

And lastly, if he was ever going to shack up with a companion, Rose is the last one I would pick for him. She's just not as good for him as say, Fitz, Ace, Benny, Jamie or Nyssa.

32. Fucking word. Cid = hotness.

.....AHAHAHAHAHAHA. No, seriously. Do you think the Doctor views humans as animals? That his companions are, what, intelligent, argumentative, fantastic creatures on par with dogs? Or that they're, for all the species' flaws, immature and unable to make their own choices? Like he can't take into account the life expectancy of any different race he encounters and figure out whether or not they're children?

I'll just leave a link to the Wiki section about the Doctor and romance, which was compiled from every incarnation of the Doctor.

I think you pretty well said what I've been thinking (if a bit differently). Of course he can take into account different life expectancies and all. Travels the universe, sees all sorts, of course he can. And even watching Classic Who, I still never got the feeling of the Doctor as a completely asexual being. Certainly not as powered on the sex drive as an average human, but really (anyway, I'd imagine a species that long-lived would have a less active sex drive than humans, but not nonexistant).

I don't get how his relationship with Rose invalidates anything. I could easily imagine the Doctor having a relationship with quite a few of his companions, and for all that it was never clearly shown, it's not entirely knocked either (unless you'd really expect a children's show in the 1960's to have a relationship between an older man and a younger, kilt-wearing Scottish lad...).

It's mainly because RTD and some of the of Doctor/Rose shippers (not all! Just some of them, but mainly RTD) like to bash others across the face that Rose is the speshulist, most awesomeist companion eva, she is the Doctor's one twu wuv and no one could replace Rose in the Doctor's life (well, this is the way it comes across to me, YMMV).

THAT's what makes it seem like they're invalidating all the past companions, and the Doctor's relationship with them. Well, to me, anyway :)

Re: 27, 32

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2008-03-02 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Ah. Okay, I can see your point. I haven't encountered that so much (I think being a shipper gives me some weird immunity to the batchippers, apparently). I didn't really feel like RTD was doing that with the series, but that's me. For me, how special Rose was only epmhasized how special all the other companions were as well when I went back and watched the classic series. But I can see where you could see it as being heavy-handed (to be fair, it got that way sometimes; I guess when it's your ship being validated, it doesn't bother you so much).

To be truthful, I don't think anyone can ever replace Rose in the Doctor's life--that is, I don't think anyone else can fill the place she filled. But then, I don't think anyone can replace Jamie or Jo or Sarah Jane or Romana or Evelyn or...
(Although as far as replacing her as a companion, I have to admit that Martha fell short, mostly because--hey, let's dive right back into romance! Which was probably RTD's fault, and that's where

I'd see the most OMIGOSH, ROSE IS SPESHUL! happening, as opposed to actual episodes with Rose in.)
But thanks for clarifying.

PS--your icon makes me giggle. ^_^

Well, I don't tend to take Wiki very seriously, so I'll leave that aside.

Bad choice of words, I admit, but I don't think the Doctor sees humans as something he would want to have sex with. We are, to Time Lords, a lower species, something that IS canon, as it has been mentioned in the series.

Or maybe we're all just allowed to have different interpretations of a character that's been around since 1963? Doesn't make my view of the Doctor any less valid than yours, unless I start saying he can shoot lasers out of his eyes.

Finally, I have three cats. I see them as intelligent, argumentative and fantastic, and GREAT companions, and I love them all to bits. But I don't see them as the same species as me.

I don't mean to be argumenative (I really don't!), but that kind of creeps me out. I was thinking the other day whether or not the Doctor maybe considered his human companions to be more like pets than people. I mean, I had a cat(I still miss her) that I could have actual conversations with (I swear, she understood English, and she was a lot easier to understand than most of my friends), but I'd hate to think that the Doctor saw humans as that.

But like you said, character's been around for 40+ years, there's canon series, sub-canon seasons, comics, audios, novels, etc etc, not to mention ten official incarnations of him (or should we count the Valeyard for eleven?)... I think it's a safe bet that with all the fans, people see him differently.

Heck, some fans still disagree over Spock, and he doesn't have nearly the force behind him the Doctor does...

...penalty on the comment for overuse of parenthesis.

The thing about my cats was more just because the other replier said that I was saying the Doctor compared his companions to dogs and used that same phrases :)
