And for the record, while I don't consider Harry Potter a masterpiece in any sense of the word, I've felt more emotional pull while reading it than plenty of other "literary masterpieces" out there. It really doesn't matter how well you write if I don't give a fuck about your characters. Great Expectations comes to mind, vividly.

Ugh- When I was in 9th grade English, everyone in our grade level had to read Great Expections, and I can pretty much say that the only memorable part of that book was when the old lady's dress caught on fire.

The only memorable part of it for me was when we watched the version done by Masterpiece Theatre. I read the first chapter and couldn't continue, so I just read the study guides and figured out the characters from Sparknotes. I have to hand in my intellectual card now, don't I?
