The cliqueyness is annoying. As an old-oldbie (or something) I can remember the fandom being tiny - I guess with a larger one people necessarily move into groups, but it's still a shame.

I know part of the problem with the fic-reviewing is that a lot of people have got very fed up with the alarming amount of unbetaed badfic that seems to be appearing at the moment, and therefore are only reading/reviewing things by people they know. Some people have got a bit over-cautious and OTT about it, though. And the same goes the other way, unfortunately, because people - being people - will whinge. *ponders scary amounts of Team-Building Group Activities*

To be honest, I say this as a newbie who watches a lot more than participates, I don't think there's a large amount of cliqueness. There's obviously some, because you always get that with communities that have built up slowly, but it's not something that makes you feel left out or anything, more like there's something there to get in to. I really like it.

As for the fic reviewing, uh, I must say the quality of what's posted isn't as high as it always was. Not a problem, because everyone is able to participate blah blah, but I think it's reasonable that people only review good stuff.

Friendliest fandom I've ever been in; it's a lovely comm.

Sometimes, I think interest groups can be mistaken for cliqueyness. For example, J/J slashers, aren't necessarily going to click on and review a Richard/James fic, yet a different group of people will. Plus, as a writer of AU crack, I appreciate this is *far* from everyone's cup of tea. Another thing, when I first got here, I tried to R and R just about everything new coming in. It became impossible - I'm not used to a large fandom like this, and you just can't keep it up, and I hope people I miss don't necessarily think I think they're bad/nasty/evil/rubbish etc.

Not sure if anyone is interested in my ramblings, or whether I'm just stating 'department of the bleeding obvious' stuff...but, I guess what I'm saying is, this fandom seems pretty nice to me. *spreads love...she hopes*

You have a pretty good point there :) I also used to R and R everything, and then I stopped (partly because I'm rubbish, but also partly because there is an awful lot of Stuff).

I still think TGS is about the nicest fandom I've ever been in *g* But maybe I'm biased...

*huggles you*
*wonders what cliques she's in now, what with huggling the mod and stuff. Wants an 'I'm in the elite badge,' please*

The groups-round-fic-you-like starts to look more like a clique (though it isn't necessarily) when you start talking about style of fic. So if A is a fan of metaphor-laden moodpiece fic, they're not likely to read/comment on/friend those members of the comm who like graphic bdsm or carsex or cracky AUs.

That's all well and good (because B who likes carsex, may not like "pretentious" fic) but the problem comes because some people associate 'metaphor moodpiece' with 'good' and carsex as somehow 'lesser' (you see this both from those reading/writing moody stuff and in a sort of chippy defensiveness from those reading/writing the cracky stuff) so it stops being 'we're in this group because we like to read J/J' and is perceived as 'we're in this group because we're all so sooper smart and better than you.'

Which is utter shit. Just to take one example, Riona and Draco write pretty much crack all the time, and I love their stuff, even though I'd naturally gravitate more to the angsty/metaphor side of things. But I would defend their position as 'good' writers to the death.

I suspect I may be part of the 'crackfic clique', and I don't think darker, more serious, or more plausible stuff is inferior or pretentious. I just really like writing barking mad ideas and reading stuff that makes me laugh at the strangeness. So I gravitate to what appeals. On occasion, I like stuff that's more plausible and serious. Sometimes, I like plausible and funny. I just tend to read and write stuff that appeals to me at the time and generally prefer the crack.

*passes an olive branch from crackfic fans to angsty moodpiece fans, to smooth over any possible misunderstandings*

I will (almost always) review everything I read, good or bad. Usually I can find something to say, even if I didn't think the fic was all that great overall.

But if it clearly needs a beta, and/or the spelling is appalling or the story doesn't grip me, I won't finish reading and i won't review.

My time's a bit limited atm, which is why (like a lot of ppl) I'm cutting back from reading fics by people I don't know.

Hoo. I totally didn't know a whole thread had built up based on my comment o.O

But with the cliqueyness... Well, I'm a relative newbie in that I contribute little and lurk a lot (and skim past most posts rated over PG anyway :/), so maybe I'm just not noticing it. Some people contribute more than others, so it's natural that they're the more prominent members of the group.
