28. Oh god, I know exactly what you mean. I was devastated by that, first by his death and then by the realization of what he had done, and it left me very depressed for the next day.

I had good, strange luck, though. Two days later, my friends and I were traveling to Japan and as it turns out, so were a couple of wrestlers, one of them being "American Dragon" Bryan Danielson, who's pretty huge on the independent scene, and he was just insanely friendly and personable and after I introduced myself to him, when we were stuck in the same situation due to missing connecting flights he actually sought me out on the bus to the hotel and we ended up chatting about random stuff. I think the combination of the Benoit situation and meeting Danielson in such short succession re-enforced my sort of... acceptance that wrestlers aren't heroes or idols or role models by virtue of being wrestlers; they're just people. Chris Benoit was a fucking amazing wrestler, and I can accept him as that and still detest what he seemingly became as a person.

... though that doesn't mean that watching old matches of his isn't really surreal now. Man.

There's also, of course, the investigations and the findings about his mental state and all of that. It's... a tough, slippery slope, and I don't really believe WWE's claims that this was all his fault because, well. I heavily doubt that. Anyone who watched Benoit, especially ten years ago when he and Eddy Guerrero were working INCREDIBLY head-droppy matches, certainly has to take those kinds of things into account. So I didn't mean to gloss that over or anything at all, and I realized that maybe I did a little here.
