I just can't see Ten being permanently happy with anyone - not because I hate the character, but because there's more wrong with him than can be fixed by giving him a girlfriend or boyfriend.

Truth, truth, and more truth. I think that's something I love about Ten--he seems all happy and bouncy, and a lot of people who don't like his character say it's because he's so hyper and a little (pardon the term) spazzy. But just like Nine's (and Six's! Gotta love Six) prickly edges hid this wild exuberant joy, Ten's happy-go-lucky wackiness is just a smoke screen to hide the fact that, honestly, he's probably the most screwed up (and creepy) of the Doctors so far. Nine dealt with being alone by being broody and making sarcastic comments and all that. Ten deals with it...by not dealing with it. That boy has more issues than National Geographic, and that's just who he is.

Of course, like you said, fanfic and all...I'm a sucker for that. But even not being alone...being with the Master would just be a different kind of torture. Poor Doctor.

it's ironic that the Doctor's 'prejudice' causes him to run away from the one companion who could actually stay with him forever.

Well, even Jack doesn't last forever, even if he doesn't turn into head-in-a-jar. He said before that he does age, just very slowly.
