Now, I can tolerate most of Pokémon fandom's ship names, but I refuse to accept "Yaoishipping".

This is me with the Yu-Gi-Oh fandom.

The dumbest ship name I came across there was "Bananashipping" for Tristan/Marik, because, get this: Marik's hair is sort of kind of yellow-ish (like a banana!) and Tristan's hair is pointy and thus sort of kind of shaped like a banana if you squint. No, really. I couldn't make this shit up if I tried.

I'm not in this fandom, I'm not a gamer... but I have seen a fair amount of the cartoon, and I once wrote a short Iris/Trip fic as a gift for a friend (who was frustrated as it's apparently a really obscure pairing in the fandom).

They asked if I was going to post it online, and warned me to make sure to mark it with the correct ship name so people didn't get pissy about it. Apparently the "correct" ship name is "flavescentshipping". Whut.

Because "flavescent" = yellowish (I did not even know this without consulting a dictionary), and one character wears yellowish clothes, and the other has yellowish hair!

...Riiiight. I can definitely see how that makes so much more sense than just tagging it as "Iris/Trip". Seriously, do people pick these ship names to be as counterintuitive as possible on purpose, or are there just so damn many ships that this kind of name is necessary because all the sensible ones have been used already?

Anyway, I chose not to post the fic online.

Ship names are some of the most awful things imaginable in some fandoms

(Anonymous) 2016-01-30 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
All ship names in all fandoms are stupid.

But, PalletShipping and PearlShipping are best names!

I FEEL YOU, OP. I FEEL YOU. Those ship names are the most obtuse and confusing thing ever, and with so many characters and combinations it's so hard to keep track of which ship is called what.. Not to mention the duplicate names for more obscure pairings D:

Maybe for a fandom with a smaller pool of characters, it wouldn't be so bad - but IMO, a series as expansive as Pokemon should stick to character a/character b ship names.

Pokémon shipping names is probably like Pokémon themselves - back in 2001, you could've named all of them if somebody asked you.

And I still remembered that the Team Rocket fen had a different name for Ash/Misty than the rest of the fandom *g*

I couldn't have named all the ships even back then.
Come to think of it, this may be exactly why I never got into the fandom, either...just couldn't keep all the terminology straight.

What was the ship name? I know I know it, but I can't remember it right off. I just know it's on the tip of my tongue...D:

Twerpshipping or gakishipping. I'm not sure what it says about me that I still know these things.

It was Gakishipping that I couldn't remeber. And it was because of the whole Jari Boy thing.

Thanks!

lol this is an unfortunate result of pokemon fandom arising during a time when that pairing naming convention was popular

(Anonymous) 2016-01-31 09:53 am (UTC)(link)
Idk, they do sound stupid but I still think they're way more practical to use than name smashes when you have like 300 characters most of which have very short, very common and sometimes similar names.
