+1. Not saying you shouldn't criticise bad works, but it's not very nice to tell them to drop it and just focus on what they're already good at. They're not going to improve that way, and good on them if they want to try new things.

It is. If the person they're trashing is still writing despite the drop in comments, then it's not that they "aren't getting the hint." They just don't care as much about comments as they do about writing the story they want to tell.
