Maybe they're writing what they fucking want and don't give a shit what you'd rather they produce

and if so, good for them

(Anonymous) 2016-01-30 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
W-what?! But other people's approval is literally the ONLY REASON anyone writes fanfiction!!

(Anonymous) 2016-01-30 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Why so angry? It's always difficult to see someone who has done well in the past do less well. (Unless they're awful and it's a comeuppance of some sort.)

Just be patient, anon. Maybe they'll go back to what they're good at and you enjoy.

+1. Not saying you shouldn't criticise bad works, but it's not very nice to tell them to drop it and just focus on what they're already good at. They're not going to improve that way, and good on them if they want to try new things.

I'm with you, anon. OP sounds like a huge ass. Fuck them for being pissed that somebody's not serving their porn demands.

Despite the abrasive way this comment was worded, I have to say I agree with the sentiment.

[personal profile] lady_dragoon 2016-01-30 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. That last line of the secret just sounds shitty and entitled as hell.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-30 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
But how is this writer supposed to get better if they never step out of their comfort zone?

I give them kudos for the fact that they are trying something else.

You claim this writer isn't "good enough" to be writing angsty multi-chapter fics, and yet that's how people improve, they step outside of their comfort zone and try. So instead of telling them to go back to writing porn because they're not a great writer otherwise, how about nicely pointing out the shit that needs to be improved? As long as you aren't a prick about it, they'll start to improve over time.

Or it'll turn out they're one of those people who can't accept even constructive criticism, but then they're just being childish.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-30 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
This. And a decrease in comments when comparing PWP to multi-chapter fics isn't always a fair comparison. Some people just don't read multi-chapter, and if her followers are the ones commenting on the PWP, maybe the multi-chapter isn't their thing. Also doesn't mean it's a terrible story either.

IA with this. Even if the author isn't used to writing this kind of story yet, practice will help them improve. If OP doesn't like their non-smutty stuff they can either ask if they want constructive criticism, or move on and read something else.

Because most people write what they want to write, so let them do it.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-30 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I've actually been on the other side of the coin recently.

For me, writing porn is fun and easy. It's a great way to get the creative juices flowing again.

Someone whose opinion mattered to me basically told me to "stop writing so much smut".

I haven't written anything in months because I'm dealing with the mental fallout (yes, I have documented mental issues, am seeing a therapist, and am on meds).

I actually commend the writer the OP is complaining about for sticking to his/her guns and continuing the long, angsty fic despite the drop in reviews/hits/etc.

This secret kind of hits me. Because I'm a writer who mostly writes porn, and I often feel like it is the only thing I do well. But I do want to experiment with other things. My shorter non-porn stuff has gotten some positive reactions. And I've got some ideas for what I want to try once I have the time to sit down and really write. But now I'll be thinking that people are thinking this.

I think the writer in this secret probably has more of a problem with change in audience than change in quality, if anything. I just don't think you can expect every person who liked your porn to also want to read your plotty things. But there will also be people who will be interested in the other stuff when they didn't want to read the porn. OP just isn't the audience for the new stuff this person is writing.

it's possible, but in a way pwp makes it really easy for the reader- enjoyment of the material comes easy to them given the right pairing and kinks, while it is pretty difficult to write!
bringing together the actions, emotions, logistics, psychology... it takes a mastery.

feeling entitled to this kind of entertainment (while understandable) is pretty pathetic.

I'm sure you will write more worthwhile stuff and that you'll profit from your experience.

What hint? I thought it was conventional wisdom that PWPs often get more comments than multichaptered angst? Maybe they expected the comments to drop off like that.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-30 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
My writing partner criticized me incessantly whenever I tried new styles and forms because I wasn't as good at those as I was at what we always wrote.

Years later, of course, I've improved tremendously as I writer while she's still writing at the same level, and it's becoming... rather painfully apparent.

Eh, let 'em write what they want. It's not like there is or ever will be a dearth of pwp writes in any fandom ever. Maybe writing what they're writing now is more fun for them than what they were writing before.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-30 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
This is exactly why I don't usually stray much beyond porn. I know I'm good at porn, I don't have confidence that I can do much more than porn. Not that I'm afraid that people would hate me for not writing porn, but that what I'd write wouldn't be any good.
