My writing partner criticized me incessantly whenever I tried new styles and forms because I wasn't as good at those as I was at what we always wrote.

Years later, of course, I've improved tremendously as I writer while she's still writing at the same level, and it's becoming... rather painfully apparent.

What, that you are a bit of a supercilious ass? I'll be willing to bet neither of you is that good.

AYRT said they'd improved tremendously, which is what happens when you step outside a box of comfortable writing and try new things. They didn't say they turned into OMG THE BEST WRITER EVER.

So... who's the ass?

lol I knew that comment would touch a nerve with the kind of writer who likes to stay nestled in their safe zone, comfortably mediocre.

I'm sorry to say, that's just how it played out/plays out in real life when someone takes risks and makes and effort, and someone else doesn't.

People who get that ruffled about honest acknowledgment of improvement usually have some insecurity.

Confident people don't get that butthurt when someone else acknowledges that they made progress in something.

There's no need to feel threatened. If you want to stay in your comfort zone and never venture out of it, that's fine. You do you. But when others want to experiment, don't drag them down just so you'll have company in your zone.

Some people don't understand that if you want to improve, you HAVE to challenge yourself to try new things. You won't always be particularly good at the new things you try, but very few people are. You do it anyway, because it's the only way to broaden your experiences.
