Well there are (or were, at a time) some James/Severus shippers out there somewhere, so...

I still ship them :( I was surprised when I first started shipping it and didn't find much of a fandom, I always thought schoolboy-rival ships were popular.

Not when loser fangirls projected their bullied grade and high school selves unto to Sevvy-p00.

I think Snape/Lupin is the most popular of those ships from what I've seen, probably because of the extra angst of Lupin almost killing Snape and his subsequent fear of werewolves.

But Snape/Lupin wasn't really written as a rival ship. It was more tragic lovers who would have been destined to be friends from the very beginning if those assholes James and Sirius didn't interfere.

I haven't seen much of that but I probably just haven't read enough of that ship.

I admit I haven't read much Snape/Lupin since OotP came out, but I read more than one of those earlier fics where the plot was essentially Severus and Remus were friends or boyfriends, someone, usually Sirius, breaks them up and then they reconnect during the Prisoner of Azkaban timeline.
