(Anonymous) 2016-01-30 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)1. Why is this such a hot topic this week?
2. I never really thought much about James as a character. He was always just...Harry's dead father. He was part of the backstory and of course influenced the story through the ways that other characters (especially Harry) felt about him. Whereas Snape was a character in the present story who moved it forward. So I guess I never thought there was anything to like or dislike about James.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-30 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)I like Snape because I think he was a young idiot with not much guidance who, in his teens and twenties, basically fucked up his entire life
I like James because he was clearly pampered, entitled, and a bully but he at least realized there were some lines one shouldn't cross (like saving Snape from Lupin) and eventually realized he'd been an asshole
They're both compelling and flawed characters in their own way

(Anonymous) 2016-01-30 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)And honestly, while I have serious problems with woobie!Snape, I don't have an issue with that. I don't agree with the interpretation, and I don't think that it's supported by the series canon as a whole, but again it's James. We don't have much to work with. If you want to run with the narrative that James was nothing but a bully and Snape was a little asshole who left a wake of destruction behind him, but finally figured out how to do the right thing for the wrong reasons and helped save the world... cool.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-31 05:20 am (UTC)(link)They're both people who think they're doing the best thing, without looking to an outside source to confirm if what's in their heads is even vaguely all right. So in that sense, I find them both compelling. I'm not sure if "like" is the right word, but I don't "dislike" them either, so it's a bit more complicated than that, I think.
