Two things.

1. Why is this such a hot topic this week?

2. I never really thought much about James as a character. He was always just...Harry's dead father. He was part of the backstory and of course influenced the story through the ways that other characters (especially Harry) felt about him. Whereas Snape was a character in the present story who moved it forward. So I guess I never thought there was anything to like or dislike about James.

I completely agree about 2. I'm always kind of reminded of arguments about a celebrity's "real personality" under their persona that people insist they know all about despite never having met them when I read discussions that go deep into James's character. We're just not shown much about him.
